Helpful guidance from Harold in his garage opposite the big parking space. Best route with no fences to climb. Go through the gate to right of his garage straight up to the top right hand corner of field and go right through number of open gates then left up the final field to the trig

From HU 3416 5637. Direct route over sheep pastures, some stock fencing to negotiate. Pillar retains original centre cap, raised lettering; RHS sight hole open. Extensive panorama. Lost all my photos from today.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 11th August 1959, cost not on record. Computed as tertiary triangulation station HU46/T26 in 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in June 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from southeast. Michaelswood car park (donation box) is off north side of B9071 at HU340558. From north end of car park, a path leads west through the wooded area and onto farmland. Following the fencelines heading NNW, any fence crossings are easy as there are no barbed lines. Grassy top used for grazing. Pillar in good condition, GPS plate affixed. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces south ~173. Vented through east sight hole. Full 360 panoramic view.

Having been out to Vementry to visit the Muckle Ward bolt (TP8191) with Victor Gray of St Magnus Bay Charters I was invited to his house below The Dudd for tea & biscuits. After this I set out up the hill from beside the house, directly ENE of the pillar. I followed the fenceline that runs SSW then WSW past a newly-built house. At the top of this field I crossed the fence and turned west directly towards the pillar. The whole route requires just a couple of fence crossings. The hill seems a very even shape and has quite a flat top. The pillar carries a GPS plaque and has some cracking to the surface. FB faces S; E sighthole open, all others plugged; metal cap with raised letters. Nice views over Aith Voe, East Burra Firth and Loch of Vaara.

Started from the Aith-Vementry road, cut threw between two houses onto old NW heading farm track and took a bearing to go W to trig point when reaching a farm gate. Short and sweet on a clear blustery sunny November afternoon.

Started from the Clousta road at HU3199955925 and followed the shoreline of Loch of Vaara to a fenceline that takes you to the top. Heather covered slopes which are very wet at this time of year. Great views over aith and on to Scalla Field eastwards and Muckle Roe with South Ward visdible. Weather a fine autumnal afternoon. Definately not a dud!
