Next up after the Softlaw Berntsen. Easy to reach - up the water track until the sharp right turn. That only leads to a locked compound, so enter field on right, unplanted headland on this visit. At the far corner there is a wooden fence at a gap in the electric fence. Faint path to summit and trig, outside the bloody fence for once. Good views today.

Bit of an obstacle course to get to (no electric fence, though). Trig was swamped in a thicket of rosebay willowherb when I arrived so a bit of gardening with my boots was in order.

Almost 2 years from the last logged visit & to be honest Im not surprised this one isnt visited more often - its a sod to get to once you reach the end of the track despite the trig only being 30 yards from the gate across the end of the track at the water board compound. Be prepared for dense conifers on the clockwise route round the fence. However its a pleasant enough spot once you reach the top of the hill with extensive views in most directions. Safe parking on the verge 200 yards NW along the road from the end of the access track

The Kip Not much paint left on it compared to the earlier pics.

Pillar VGC, just outside fortified resr compound. Spider retains OS plug with deep indented lettering. RHS sight hole open others plugged. FB faces 251 WSW. Historically Secondary Station NT72/31. Pillar completed 10th March 1953. Follow mapped track almost to locked gates of resr compound. Electric and barbed fencing surround the field to the right of compound gate. Easiest option is clockwise around compound, fighting through conifers. Only suitable parking nearby is in the entrance of the access track which means blocking it for the duration of your visit. Views partially blocked by conifers but still able to see from trig to Monylaws, Camp Hill, Longknowe Hill, Cheviot, Staerough Hill, Linton Hill, Morebattle Hill, Bank Hill, Rubers Law, Peniel Heugh, Eildon Mid Hill. Revisited 21/03/2008, GRP.

First visit. To record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 10th March 1953 costing 16.17s.0d. In 1957 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station NT72/31 in the Jedburgh secondary block. Flush bracket S7381 was levelled for height in 1971. Last maintained by the OS in September 1986. SITE VISIT: That hideous fence came after my visit. As Iain says, luckily the trig is outside.
