The Righi, last of a four trig forage to 'kick-off' the Crewe & Nantwich 257 OS map...Highash, Broomy Bank Farm & Raw Head. Drove right up to park aside the Highash trig & just about to depart from it when a young chappy in his great big tractor & trailer approaching us head-on from the North, winding-down his window, announced in a somewhat unfriendly manner that we were on a private road. In our defence, we drove thro' an open-gate, there was no signage as to the road being private & 'walk markers' indicated the area to be accessible on foot at least! Polite, we turned the car around as he passed by us & proceeded to cross the A534 to enter Ridley Bank Farm. The Broomy Bank Farm hedge trig 'bore it's fruits' to the road with not only its flush bracket being visible roadside but plentiful blackberries too. Unable to en-circle the trig consequence of hedging, I was able to climb on top of it... To access more blackberries of course! Atop of The Sandstone Trails highest point Raw Head spoke to Brian Yearwood & his missus 'over' from Perth having just completed the 'Coast to Coast'. It was most interesting to discover his job in Perth had been with the OS & trigpoints & he provided me with an abundance of information apertaining to them...Partner Pam was my devils advocate & Raw Head my 666th pillar. The Righi proved to be quite a challenge situated within a hedge amidst a head-high crop but find it, eventually I did. Crossing the road from The Righi into a 'clearing', I walked along the edge of the crop with the vegetated embankment roadside to my right with, after a short time, a left turning to follow a rough green furrow between hedge left & crop right. Engrossed within the hedge left, unable to walk around the trig, I just about managed to stand on top of it...Alas no blackberries this time though!

Looking for a parking space, I followed my wife’s instinctive instruction to “pull in here”. Turned out to be good, although bijou. (The following day I put my thumb on the OS App for the grid reference SJ48018 57660 aerial map.) Followed field boundary adjacent to the lane, initially west, before a sharp left to follow another boundary that contains the trig. Once again I am indebted to OS for enabling me to locate the trig amongst the undergrowth.

As previously reported the trig is damaged, well into the hedge and had the Royal Engineers crest on it. Winter is a good time to bag this trig as fields are bare and hedge has shed its leaves!

Parked on Rocky Lane. Walked up the path towards Daisybank Farm. Around 50 yards up the path, turned left into the field in which the pillar is situated through a gap in the hedge. Then crossed the field to the other side where the pillar can be found in front of the hedge. This is a crested trig pillar, as it was built by the Royal Engineers in the mid 1940's, and they would place their regimental crest on to the pillar. Wynnstay Hall near Ruabon, Wrexham, was used as a training establishment for the Royal Engineers Survey Cadre, and as part of their training during the 1943-47 period, the trainees were tasked with building some of the secondary and third order pillars. The Righi pillar is one of only eight that have the crest. The pillar looks as though it has been hit on a couple of occasions by agricultural machinery. There is a large chunk missing from the top front left corner and half way down the front right

There is a large chunk out of the top of the pillar and another large chunk out of the SW face, almost certainly the result of over-zealous agricultural machines. The plug is original with slightly-indented lettering. Just a trace of paint. All sightholes closed. Interestingly, on the SW face, a small sculpture, which looks rather like a torch or beacon, about 12" x 6", has been added to the pillar.
