Last ridiculously out early to The Lakes in accomodating the long drive & ensuring ample time to 'bag' what i'm calling 'The Seascale to Hodbarrow Seven'. Thornbank, Seascale, Cumblands, Corney Hill, Annaside Banks, Southfield Banks & Hodbarrow...For Thornbank parked at GR 07153 01946 & crossing the A595 proceeding North-East 'passed' thro' a hedge & climbed a coupl'a barbed-wire fences in reaching the trig. For Seascale on-road parked in front of St Cuthberts Church Hall at GR 03724 01186 with a short road walk North 'leading' me via a tarmac 'carpet' thro' the golf course to the trig embanked to the right. For Cumblands lay-by parked North of the Bell Hill Farm track at GR 08212 98110 & 'taking' a left continued on the track to climb a coupl'a gates to locate the trig engrossed in the hedge to the left. For Corney Hill off-road parked 'pulled-in tight' off the A595 to the right of the track 'heading' East for the hall at GR 10181 90549. 'Taking' the track eventually climbed a gate on the right to enter the field before the trig, climbing another gate to take a right to follow the wall to the trig. The pre-field walk was a somewhat disturbed one consequence of a herd of rampaging cows so much so I had to resort to 'boulder-hopping' the low wall whilst for part of the 'trig-wall' it was necessary to walk between tyres weighting-down a huge tarpauline-covered silage mound. For Annaside Banks lay-by parked in front of the church off the A595 at GR 11919 83941 & crossing the A595 followed the road to cross the railway & 'pick-up' the track North-West to eventually exit onto the beach. Walking along the beach was under the impression i'd be able to see the toppled trig on the cliff side, I couldn't & did encounter considerable difficulty locating it. Even scrambled upwards, over the top of the cliff edge, not too difficult though a little harder 'dropping-back' down under control...Sometimes forget just how old I really am, 'hearing in my head' my partner telling me i'm a grown man! Indeed it wasn't until I was practically 'on-top' of the thing courtesy of Etrex numbers that I actually found it. The problem is it's well & truelly 'bedded-in' such that really it's only one face & a bit of the base that's exposed. Descending from the trig I noticed a piece of wood & a few rocks at beach level & thought perhaps someone may have been attempting a prompt. I built a small cairn with the wood in the middle but urge those 'hunting' this trig to look out for a 'mini Blencathra' on the skyline...There's two pointed peaks with a 'saddle' in the middle akin to the shape of Blencathra at the top of the cliff directly above the trig. For Southfield Banks parked at the 'honesty box car park' GR 12112 81068 from where the coastal path right can be 'picked-up' & followed, passing thro' the golf course en-route. What's the difference between a pay & display & honesty box car park when the honesty box requests a minimum donation...£2 in the case of this one? Absurd, an honesty box stipulating a price. For Hodbarrow free car parking at GR 17549 78987 with an easy follow thro' to the derelict windmill & trig...Out at 04:30 & back in by 16:15 from a 251 mile 'round' trip having 'bagged' my last seven trigs on The English Lakes South-Western area OS map OL6. And, that's me finished in The English Lakes having done every trig in all four quadrants & Whithaven & Workington too!

Look out for a 'mini Blencathra' on the skyline!©StewB

There are good views E to Latterbarrow and Irton Pike; N to farmland & Gosforth village; W to the sea; S obscured by trees on nearby Stubshead Hill. The pillar has a fine patina of cracks over much of it, but nothing threatening the integrity of it - yet; original cap in place, with raised lettering, the first one of this type I've seen. It has some white sealant around it that wasn't there this time in 2012, so someone has been doing some maintenance - DIY? 1 sight hole is open, 1 is beneath ground level.
