Pulled over into lay-by on west side of A46 about 300 metres south of the M4 junction. Headed off through woods to the west then checked map and cut through to track heading west on south side of woods. At end of track field opened out. No sign of pillar. There’s a reservoir compound to the south on higher ground. Wondered if it would be in there. Looked along northern field boundary. Decided to check detailed map on here. Showed it should be on south east side of mast. Over wall into wooded area, wondered if it might be in the fenced mast compound. Then spotted pillar covered in ivy, fortunately outside the mast compound. Removed ivy and pushed away some of the overhanging bushes. A bit of fly tipped litter lying about. Ugh. Cap missing. Slightly chipped top. Raised S prefix. No views. Before mast was built and vegetation grew up, probably had a good view westward. In the open field, quite a good view towards Bristol along the M4. Only read other logs after writing mine. Didn’t see anyone else. However I did feel like I needed a bath afterwards. Not the only fly tipped area visited today, others in Bristol were also in grubby locations.

Quick photo before making a hasty retreat. Never going back there. Disgusting place.

Was a bit unsure of visiting this one owing to the previous comments. I approached via the Cotswolds Way from Dyrham and there is a sign a mile before the trig diverting you away from Beacon Lane due to 'a serious police incident'. I ignored and walked on. As I got nearer to the trig, police vehicles were visible next to the plantation. In the plantation itself, no trouble finding and logging trig but there were men in the woods so beat a hasty retreat over the A46 and returned to Dyrham in a big loop. No warning signs from the A46 entrance.

Luckily I didn’t walk through the woods on the footpath but up the track alongside. I saw at least 5 men and when I got to where my GPS said it was I couldn’t see it. I started to peer into the foliage when I realised one of the guys was watching me intently and started to move towards me. With that I left and beat a retreat. Unless I have an armed bodyguard I’m not going back to try and find it. At least two of the cars in the lay-by had guys in them and when I got back they got out to inspect me! I felt dirty, a truly horrible experience.
