A survivor of the sprawl of residential areas around Swindon. A bit of a shock when using a 1974 OS map. Unsurprising though. Junction 16 of the M4 was much more complicated than the roundabout I had expected. Had to check detailed map and zoom in to street names. As it turned out I was pretty close and rode through housing estate and pulled over opposite footpath heading east between houses. Aimed uphill, into open park. About 100 metres further on pillar sits in an opening between a couple of bushes. Probably somewhere closer to park but reasonably pleased to get here. Slightly damaged around base, possibly by grass cutting equipment. Pleased to see spider and cap in place. What a great name as well. Getting out of Swindon was another story.

First of four trigs bagged on Towel Day. (I didn't hitchhike my way to it, but I did bring a towel.) Pillar in a park in the middle of a housing estate in Swindon - a nice easy one to reach. Views aren't all that great (and even if they were, they'd be of Swindon), but it's always nice to see a pillar survive being encompassed by a city.

Another example of trigging taking you to places you would normally never go to - especially the suburban sprawl of Swindon housing estates. Luckily the planners left some green space (being extensively enjoyed by dog walkers) and a trig - rather surrounded by trees, but good views S, including Wroughton trig, a few yards away. Surprisingly, metal cap (deep letters, remains of red paint) still in place; W and E s/holes open and some damage to lower part of N side + s/hole, but otherwise structurally sound.

The trig could be seen from the back of no. 48. Trig slightly damaged, as noted by previous loggers, original metal cap with indented letters painted red but now fading, front, right and rear sight holes open, left sight hole below ground level. I left a 2p coin in the front sight hole (below the FB) for the next visitor to find.

The trig stands in a break of a tall hedge in a small green space next to a housing estate. The pillar is splattered with mud on one side; it is slightly battered on its base and on its top; one of the top corners is chipped off; it has a red painted metal cap with deep lettering and it has FB S6240. The open space was easily accessed from a street called White Castle. There is nothing to see from the pillar apart from the adjacent grass fields and the surrounding trees and hedges. The nearby cycle path looks through the trees and over the motorway to the hill above Wroughton. There is a constant hum of traffic noise.
