2nd trig of today (after Greno Knoll). I hopped over the gate on Stephen Lane into the trig field and dashed up the short steep hill to the trig which looks in fine fettle. (no animals in the field today) Then headed down to the gate onto Skew Hill Lane.

Easy to find on top of the hill opposite the crematorium, this pillar is in good condition and retains its original centre. There are great views of the north of Sheffield from this site.

Good condition pillar atop a small knoll. Excellent views over Sheffield. Very curious horses! FB faces south-west-ish with north-west-ish sighthole open only. Cap present with sunken lettering.

This is not on a PROW and it was clear the landowner did not want people accessing it-there was a bathtub filled with water blocking the metal gate opposite crematorium, signs on a gate further on saying 'private' and so we didn't go to the metal gate on Stephen Lane. Visible from road

Nice walk from Birley trig except for last road section. Horses present and wouldn't move.

(1484) Parked up at the crematorium, and from there it was a short walk down to the metal gate leading into the field. Plenty of horses in the field, with no less than 7 of them loitering around the pillar. Not being a country boy, I was unsure as to how they'd react to me being amongst them, and they didn't look like they was about to move any time soon either. Deciding to hang around for a while, my patience paid off. Within a relatively short space of time, all the horses had wandered off - well, all bar 1. Thinking this will be as good as it gets, I made my move. Field littered with 'oss muck, so it was a case of watching where you walked. Pillar soon reached and all appears good. Pillar history: Built on the 7th of July 1947, at a cost of £6 0s 9d. Last maintained by the OS in July of 1985.

Mission to see some of the brutalist concrete structures of Sheffield - but the deal is I have to bag a trig. Field was empty, a beautiful windy cloud scud view of the moors, woods and city.

Easy to locate, but minor trespass needed to access. Great views all round. Horses still there, they looked friendly enough, but I decided not to bond. Visited while on along term Durham to Dorset walk.

Car parking on the roadside if approaching from the South. Quick nip over 5 bar metal gate and up the field taking car not to disturb the two resident horses. reasonable views but not a good day for visibility. spotted by the two inquisitive horses we retreated back down the field. 5 min log. Done with Nozzer.

asked if it was okay to wander across at the end house,they said it should be okay and they hadn't seen me nudge nudge wink wink,I wandered across ,took my photo with the inquisitive horses,on my way back to the gate the lady owner of the field pulled up,she was fine with my visit and told me the names of all the horses,what are the chances of the owner coming during my 3 minute visit!!!!!

Asked for permission at the end house to the north of the trig. A lady answered the door and said the owner of the field doesn't live near and that the field is not in use at the moment. There used to be horses in it. So duly bagged.

A quick hop over the gate, through very wet grass and ragwort to get good views over Sheffield. The horses were fenced off but the trig was guarded by other wildlife-- 12 slugs stuck on the sides. Is this a record for slugs on a trig point in daylight?

A pleasant walk along Birley Edge to the toposcope and Birley Stone at Whalejaw Hill. Could just make out the Arts Tower through the mist from here (4 miles according to toposcope). Then headed NE along Oughtibridge Ln to the junction with Skew Hill Ln where the pillar was easily visible. Continued along Skew Hill Ln past the crematorium until I was out of sight of the houses before entering the field and making my way uphill to the pillar. Two horses in the field weren't at all interested in my presence and nor was a chap working in his garden on Lane Head. Pillar is in good condition with original metal cap and indented lettering but just the one sight-hole open. Pleasant enough views without being spectacular.

Parked in lane to NW of pillar by the gate. It was easy enough to hop over the gate and - with at least one horse penned in in an enclosure at the bottom of the field - I thought I was quite safe... I got to the pillar and took a couple of photos before a horse wandered up the hill from out of nowhere and seemed very interested in what I was doing, possibly thinking I might have some food. Great views from here over Sheffield and the surrounding hills - even in the light rain. Taking a timed photo was interesting as the horse tried to eat the camera during the 10 second countdown! FB faces SE; SW sighthole open, others plugged. Despite my being friendly and quiet I think I may have outstayed my welcome as the very persistent horse followed me all the way back to the gate giving me a little nip on the back which told me that either it was bored or it really doesn't like having visitors! Even when I got back in the car I wasn't safe - the horse leaned over the wall and tried to eat the bodywork!

Did not have a burning desire to park in the cremetorium so parked just by the stone wall next to the field SW of the trig. Left the dog in the car and the horse kept an eye on him - literally. This enabled me to make a quick dash up to the trig point, take a couple of photos and return.

Very visible from road but only accessible if one is prepared to trespass [nowhere obvious to ask permission]. Several signs indicating Private & No Footpath. Being so close and only needing to climb a gate it seemed a shame not to go for it - which I did! Expansive views over Sheffield from this hill top location. Pillar in excellent condition with original plug with indented lettering. [Only took five minutes and not challenged]
