Parked at entrance to wind farm. Followed county boundary to trig but picked up the gravel track from a pond on the way back. Landed me along the road a bit but it gives good access.

Parked at the entrance to the new wind farm on the B7007 and followed the fence opposite heading west to the pillar. Some handy quad bike tracks to walk in for most of the way. Lovely spring evening for the walk which took about an hour for the round trip.

Came up as the crow flies, from the surface block to the SE. Returned via the gravel track that skirts the southern slope of Broad Law, meeting the road a couple of hundred yards up.

Hard slog over tussocky ground from the B7007 at the embankment to the SW. Had been a nice day but turned wet. The bonus however was a rainbow over the Pentlands.

Imagination used to score it as the clag came in just before we got there. Great views of Edinburgh from the Southern Upland fault scarp earlier. Pillar is flaking with frost damage. Intact. Did a short round from the Blackhope track.

Pillar completed in September 1943. Tertiary station in Block NT48, Edinburgh. Pillar in good condition apart from the top, which appears to have been attacked by the frost. 25% of the pillar top is missing to a depth of 1cm. The spider is complete, the OS cap has shallow engraved font. The flush bracket faces north west. Torfichen Hill is on the northern edge of the Moorfoot Hills, fifteen miles south of Edinburgh. The trig pillar is just 1 metre inside Midlothian on open grazing moor. Can be accessed from any direction but the most obvious is from the B7007 to the east. Views to Pentland Hills, Edinburgh, Arthurs Seat, Fife/Lomond Hills, North Berwick Law (lined up with Garleton Hills) Traprain Law and Bowbeat Windfarm. Revisited and photographed 21/05/2003, GRP.

Before the days of available records or the internet. Original visit to find out and record the flush bracket number. The pillar was completed in September 1943 costing 11.9s.6d. Later in 1943 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT48/T38 in the Edinburgh secondary block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1959. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1981. Long views northwards to the Pentlands, Edinburgh and Fife.
