The volcanic whaleback hump of Traprain Law was a delight to climb this morning with perfect visibility for the views. But best of all were the fabulous Exmoor ponies. I counted eleven of them, and they appeared to be mostly sleekly black in colour. Most of them were stood on or near the pathway at the summit, and were quite unconcerned about my presence as I walked among them. Pillar has asphalt cap & one s/h open. This was a beautiful visit.

Ceramic cap. Very cold wind but sunny. Distant views to snow covered highlands. Ponies sheltering but the pillar instructs visitors not to feed them. The geological term for this hill is a lacolith ..... which is a form of instrusion that gets stuck on its way to the surface at the interface between two rock layers, forming a dome.

Great to be back on the trig trail, after 6 months off due to hubby's broken ankle, and chose a good'un to resume. Nice and easy climb, following the path from the car park. Really chuffed to see the ponies on the summit and amazed at how placid they were. Traprain Law is a lovely wee hill with stunning views all round, and the Exmoor ponies are an added bonus, so a perfect 10 from me :-)

From car park. Easy if you follow the path. Great views in the sunshine. Had around 15 minutes solitude at the summit when I spotted the resident Exmoor ponies which had ignored me lower down trotting up. I legged it and when looking back saw them wandering around to see if I'd dropped any food.

Fabulous landmark. I remember first spotting Traprain Law from the A1 when driving back having completed the SUW many years ago. This and an interest in the Gododdin had made this a longstanding target. Came up the tourist route from the north. Oncoming rain clouds prevented a proper exploration of the top. Trig has had a recent coat of paint.

The whale-back shape of Traprain Law is a distinctive landmark from much of East Lothian. The hill is an important archaeological site, with evidence of inhabitation dating back over 3,500 years. In 1919 a hoard of silver from Roman times was discovered on the summit of the hill. Access is easy from the north, where there is a small car park, and some information boards describing the geology and history of the hill.
