Day four, trig eleven of my SDW walk. I first asked some workers at the nearby aerials but they couldn't help. They said the site was a Cold War radar station. I bumped in to a local who was at the nearby stables to go for a trot on her horse. She kindly took me to the trig, I explained what the pillars were for, being a good excuse for the likes of me to head for the country. She preferred viewing the scenery from the top of a horse. I had planned on staying at the nearby YHA hostel, but it was full. The weather was changing fast, becoming very windy and spitting with rain but I managed to find a spot in the front garden of a deserted house before it poured down with 40mph winds. A wild night, with little sleep. Apologies to whoever owns the place. The following morning was no better, I was picked up and returned to Hassocks where I spent the previous night. I was sincerely grateful for the help; I cut my SDW walk short, perhaps finishing it off another day.

Litle difficult to locate initially as I didn't have this plugged into the GPS. Owner arrived and I asked where it was and was cordially given directions and just asked to make sure gates were closed as she had horses in the field. Pillar in good condition and good views to be had both N and S.

I parked at the end of the road just before the Youth Hostel and walked along the South Downs way before turning north up towards the radio masts. Just before the mast compound a small gate gives access to the field in which the pillar stands. To reach it all that remained was to negotiate some paddock electrified fencing through some appropriate gaps. The pillar is in good condition and still retains an original indented letter plug. Just as I was about to leave a amy person in full combat dress (black goggles and scarf round the lower face) complete with rifle crested the hill just to the north of me. I thought this was it, I've trespassed once too often and am about to either court marshalled or shot. But apart from a few pleasntries and a warning not to go back the way he had arrived all was well and I left to quickly changed my pants!

Truleigh Hill is a very odd place. It is sited on the crest of the South Downs on the South Downs Way. Apart from various farms, smallholdings and horse stabling, it is also home to a Youth Hostel, lots of aerial masts and an underground command bunker. The latter has resulted in lots of strange concrete structures all over the place. As you make your way amongst these and the horse droppings looking for the Trigpoint, you start to wonder if you should be in the area at all. However, the pillar is there and in good condition. If anyone is interested in the installation here, have a look at this website: http://schoolsite.edex.net.uk/468/index.htm
