Difficult to access, area very overgrown. Approached from the east on forest tracks but ended up circling round from the North through deep brambles. Almost gave up until hitting the "path" others have noted. Vegetation head-high and GPS not much use in the trees. Summer visitors: forget secateurs, bring a machete. No views. Pillar itself is very gothic with moss & ivy!

Carole Engel's route works fine albeit with the limitations of 6-fig GRs. At SN 62418 00595 I took a direct route through the woods to the pillar. A very mossy and ivy clad pillar it is too. Top cap has gone, asphalt replacement; all sight holes closed, rear plug is degrading. No damage seen but the moss/ivy covering could be concealing something. A few minutes after sunrise so some odd lighting in my photos. No views.

Mickandshane's directions very very helpful (2006) without which I would have been in the woods - literally - so many thanks. However, I am a GPS person, so to clarify - park at Tawelfan (new street, not in my Sat Nav) @ SN624000. Ahead thru' metal KG on wide track. Left on path @ SN625001. Right on forest track @ SN625 004. Left on path @ SN625005 to trig. Brambles may become a problem in the future so secatuers helpful. Paths walk-able in May 2015

We thought this trig might be difficult as the development of Tircoed Woodland Village has overtook our map somewhat. Drive to Tircoed and after you cross the motorway there's a roundabout where you turn right along 'Y Cyswllt'. At the end turn right along 'Llyn Tircoed' and then turn left up 'Ffordd Ger-y-llyn'. Turn left up 'Ffordd y Goedwig' and at the end park at 'Tawelfan'. I think those directions are right but anyhow you end up at the high point of the houses. A woodland track through a wooden gate is the continuation of 'Ffordd y Goedwig', and follow this for about 150yds until you see a fainter track up through the trees on your left. Follow this until it comes to another woodland track, turn right and after about 40 yds turn left onto another faint track (between a large and small deciduous tree) which will eventually take you to the trig, which is to the left of the track. Passable views. Tarmac plug.
