I knew the centre was closed today, but decided to drive in anyhow. Result, there was a course on, so yes, I could walk up to the pillar. Gave a donation to the charity. Unusually for these parts, the pillar actually felt like it was on top of something (however small) All the horses are indoors at present, not surprising given the general state of prevailing sogginess.

Visited on a beautiful sunny day during a trip to Blackpool. Free entry to the Horse Welfare centre (pre booking required). I didn't need to mention to anyone my primary reason for the visit. The trig location is actually marked on a plan of the farm which is located outside near the picnic area. It is very easy to find and part of a lovely walk around the fields.

Parked at Penny Farm Horse Sanctuary...Truthful on entry that whilst I had no real interest in horses, I would make a donation & did intend to luncheon there, the most pleasent lady said there was no problem whatsoever in accessing the trig & that a donation wasn't necessary. Having accessed the trig, we did take a look at all the animals in all of the bays & did have lunch there & have to admit that the whole experience was a delight. The animals were all lovely & the food nice & reasonably priced. I don't think access of the trig would have been possible outside accessing the farm buildings complex.

One of four trigs bagged the morning after an overnight stay in Lytham - I had been there to see the mighty Wishbone Ash at the pavilion. This was the fourth. It is sited within the grounds of the Penny Farm Horse Sanctuary. Unfortunately it was closed at the time of my visit but the staff kindly allowed me access to the pillar. It is in generally good condition but the original centre for the spider has been replaced with a plain disc. It has views accross the paddocks.

Had to show some interest in the rescue horses to get my wife to show interest in this trig point. Turned out to be a very well run centre with lots of appreciative ponies who liked being fussed over. My luck ran out as I bent down to read the notes of a big black Shire. " ...can be bolshy.." it said ; as I was clouted with its massive head. PS to ted, the horse rescue centre was originally called Underhill Farm.

He even showed us the best way to reach it warning that it was very wet. Pillar is in excellent condition but has a replacement plastic type plug. Had a nice long chat and learned a lot about the charity that runs the sanctuary. Have accommodation for just over 50 horses, currently looking after over seventy and still have a waiting list. We left a donation to support this worth cause and hope that it will grease the entry for future visitors.

Given previous comments I went in to the farm to ask permission but given it was a Monday and farm only open wed to Saturday, the woman said no and also because couldn't go up through the farmyard as there was an isolation unit. She said to come back on Wednesday. I was only in Blackpool for an hour. Decided to take a look from the field to the west and walked up through long grass to see if I would be able to see it over the hedge. Sure enough there it was only 20-30 feet away in the sunshine and open mown grass. I photographed it from there but didn't however climb over the two barbed wire fences to go right up to it out of respect for the refusal of permission.
