Day 4 of 14: A Dunbar to Keswick walk. En route to beautiful Melrose from Lauder. Pillar in a slightly weird cow field, although they were no bother in the rain. Good condition. It's a long way to High Pike in Lakeland, the next 2 pillars were missed, but it didn't matter - heads about to be cleansed and to be honest still are - what a walk.

Pillar 301 then... Cow threat, rain threat, nae bother

Views S to snow capped summit of The Cheviot now been blighted by a new house being built, views N towards Lauder Common blighted by the National Grid pylons, views W temporarily blocked by an enormous stack of harvested timber. Plus a relentlessly barky dog in yard opposite where you pull up and park if you’re driving to this one to spoil the peacefulness of this tranquil corner of the Borders. But if you can ignore all that on a sunny, cloudless day like today the views are really rather lovely, and the pillar is in great condition.

Would have been very easy if the road wasn't so icy! Mr TJR had to park about 1km away and it was very cold and I wasn't really prepared for such a long walk!

Walking from Lauder to Melrose on SUW picking of trigs on the way. This is the second trig of the day. Three more to go before Melrose.

Good condition pillar near roadside. Decent views despite the unassuming location. FB faces east-ish with north-ish and west-ish sightholes open. Cap present with sunken lettering.

Two consecutive numbers out of two... In a quarried cattle grazing field just off a small road,a nd as I found out later the Southern Upland Way. I went in through the shelterbelt. Intact and good condition, cattle polished.

Built 23rd March 1953 as a tertiary station in Block NT72 (Jedburgh). Pillar VGC. Spider retains OS centre plug with deep stamped lettering. Flush bracket faces southeast. LHS sighting hole open, front part poked open, others plugged. On an unused grassy area just off the Southern Upland Way, also very near unclassified public road. Views to Dabshead Hill and Boon Hill. Originally visited 10/85, revisited and photographed 31/07/2004, GRP.

Just off the Southern Upland Way, this pillar is in a not very interesting location, with an electricity pylon nearby. Not the best.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 20th March 1953 costing £13.17s.9d. In 1955 the flush bracket was levelled for height. This marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT72/T104 in the Jedburgh secondary block in 1957. The trig point was last maintained by the OS in October 1985. FB S7408 is the last in a sequence of 33 consecutively numbered flush brackets in this Secondary Block. FB S7409 is in Nairnshire.
