First full day back on Shetland and great to be getting things going once again with another boat trip out to a difficultly reached trig island.

Reached at the second attempt (stormy weather 3 years ago meant I didn't make it). A very windy day this time too (I'd earlier given up cycling from Lerwick to Walls turning back at half way and took the bus instead) but being a westerly, the short crossing over Easter Sound was sheltered enough to easily manage in my inflatable packraft. I doubt there would have been many other places I would have launched today! An easy walk up the track almost to the pillar.

Having asked for and been given permission to visit this private island, the weather was dull, windy and rain at times which was unfortunate as the views and score would have been much better. The owner also showed me the preserved sperm whale skeleton that had washed up on the island a few years ago. An amazing extra benefit of the visit.

Trip out from Walls with fisherman Ian Nicolson and his fellow crewman. Good journey out to the isle with its convenient pier. Ian and friend went to fish for mackerel while I walked to the pillar! The route I took was almost direct over the hill and I can confirm it is a cylindrical pillar with FB 10517. FB faces NNW; SSE sighthole open, others plugged; metal cap with raised letters.
