Unable to do the usual logging process as this visit was the "Weaver Hill Fell Race" . Not the route we took last time up to the trig, which really is no surprise as it was a Fell Race. Starting from Daltons Dairy keep on track and when on the fields we kept left until we were at the base of the hill, then it was a vertical uphill to the top, then down the usual way. Great night after - live music, pizza and ice cream. In the diary for next year.

Once I reached Weaver Hills, forked off to the right up a hill, over a gate, and then up to the pillar on top of the hill. Fantastic setting. 6 of 11 today in and around Leek and Ashbourne.

What with the dramatic views over the two russet red sandstone quarries, and the well-placed trig, and the sort of desolate, undiscovered feel! Yet surrounded by local farmer's sheep. Little flora or other vegetation, mainly grass and sheep for what felt like miles (not really miles) added to the mystery and isolated, desolate feeling. Good parking nearby, walk well-signposted.

Across fields from Hoftens Cross to B5417 and PROW that leads to the Open Access land that skirts the W and S perimeter of Wardlow Quarry. Route across the Open Access land involved the usual confusing Staffordshire walk with poorly signed and lightly used PROW's. Timed this visit just right - a few weeks later and the scrub would be almost impenetrable. After crossing a quarry entrance the trig first comes into view as the PROW leads downhill to the foot of Weaver Hill. After crossing a stile which is unhelpfully sited in a marshy area of land I made straight up the hill to the trig. Pillar is in good condition complete with metal cap and indented lettering. Just the E sight hole closed. Expansive views spoilt only by quarries to W and NW and scruffy farmyard to N. Continued E across the Open Access land, eventually emerging onto Back Ln. Followed the lane back past Weaver Farm where an entire herd of cows and their young were just sitting in the road. Gave them as wide a berth as possible but still too close an encounter for my liking. Thanfully the warm weather probably meant they were too hot and bothered to be upset by my presence. Upon reaching the A52 I turned left and then picked up the bridleway leading past Dale Farm and down onto Dale Lane (bridleway). Heading NW along the dale I missed the first couple of PROWs leading out to Milkgate. More by luck than judgement I eventually spotted a gap stile at ** which finally emerged onto Milkgate at Huddale. After a short walk NW along the tarmac I came to another PROW that crossed the small hill separating Milkgate and the A523 Leek Rd. Followed the PROW directly opposite that traverses several fields back into Calton. In one of these fields I was charged by a flock of 20+ sheep. In no way was this intimidating - being charged by 5 or 6 cows IS intimidating !!

I cannot believe no-one has bagged this yet! The Weaver Hills are the southernmost limestone outcrop of the Pennines. There are superb views south towards Cannock Chase.

Part of an 8 mile ramble. It hailed on the way up but brightened up at the top. Superb views all round. My first primary. The photographs were added on a return visit on 01/03/14, about 12 years later.
