OS give July 1982 as destruction date for this. Parked at field entrance due S and walked out onto River Arun flood plain to where it was sited on bank of a drainage channel, or rife as they are called in Sussex (and maybe other regions). Wouldn't be surprised if foundations became compromised on this marshy land and it toppled into said rife. Wetlands - a twitchers paradise.

only the flush bracket remains and it was brought for me to see in a bar in North Yorkshire. it had been used as a paperweight in the OS offices in Southampton until the late 80's. the FB was in excellent condition.

The OS seem to think that the pillar has been destroyed, (in 1982), and I'm not going to disagree with them. As others have done before me, I walked out to the site of the pillar, just to make sure. Pity it went, it's a rather pleasant location, and rather low too. Similar in fact to TP5531 just a couple of miles to the South-West.

I was staying in the nearby Youth Hostel - nice place. Took a walk around the nearby footpath by the river with no sign of it and then was about to access the field where the trig had lived when I saw the farmer in it feeding his cattle so gave it a miss.

Walked to the exact GPS location - nothing here except a very wet field with a stream running across it!

Almost certainly missing. I tramped over the low lying boggy fields looking for it - thought it might have sunk ! 10 digit grid ref should confirm its demise.

This pillar was sited next to an iron age fort in the Arun Valley. The FB no is taken from the O/S listings on Trigonomy Yahoo Group. This pillar is recorded as having been seen years ago, but there is no sign of it from the road today. I intend to get a closer look very soon and will confirm its status then.
