Finally officially bagged the trig today, a great 16 mile walk in glorious sunshine. Parked by Ladybower Res, walked up E side of Alport Dale and got to the trig with no problem, a sharp contrast to the previous attempt which I've transferred to this log. Returned via Derwent Edge, stunning views all day. (12/2/17 I've been to this trig several times over the years but kept forgetting to officially log it so decided to go and bag it today, solo. The weather forecast was crummy with snow and strong wind; it turned out so. I went as far as I thought safe, only 10 minutes away from the pillar and decided to turn back on to an 'escape' route down to Ladybower, direct into the biting easterly 30mph wind, the hail was stinging my skin. But hey, I enjoyed it, the excitement of the most extreme weather I've ever walked in. I'll go another day...)

Having stayed overnight at Hathersage YHA, I delayed my start to 9am as hoping for fog to clear. By the turn for Bamford it had turned to bright sunshine. The white trig on Win Hill was visible over the top of a lingering strip of cloud. Cycled on past Ladybower, Derwent and Howden dams. Left bike and changed from cycle shoes into walking boots and followed signed footpath steeply upward for Alport rocks, then right along crest , before branching right to pillar. Returned by same route (about 55mins each way). Lunched at Fairholmes before heading home via Tideswell, Monyash, Tissington Trail and Ashbourne. Afternoon had changed back to the misty grey of yesterday's.

Parked at Hurst Clough car park and followed the road down to Bridge End car park where I took the PROW leading up onto Hagg Side. Continued NW along the ridge via permissive path leading to Rowlee Pasture and Alport Castles. Trig first comes into view shortly after Alport Castles. Continued heading NW above Alport Dale, eventually crossing a couple of cloughs where the path then becomes rather faint. Followed compass bearing directly to trig which was in good condition with original cap and indented lettering. Just one sight-hole open. Ground heavily eroded around base but no moat guarding it today. From the pillar I headed directly across Westend Moor on a bearing of 065 to the waterfall in Black Clough. Had to cross one fence on the way - is this allowed given it's open access land ? I don't recommend this route as the descent into Black Clough was surprisingly steep. Followed the stream down through the plantation eventually meeting the River Westend and a forest track leading to the road that runs around the western limb of Howden Reservoir. Finally it was a seemingly never ending march along the tarmac beside Howden, Derwent and Ladybower Reservoirs back to the car at Hurst Clough.

The walk up the entire length of the river from Alport Bridge to the headwaters at Grains-in-the-Water is sheer delight. From there, it is easy enough to get up onto the Pennine Way. Mark Richards describes the route in his 'High Peak Walks', rightly calling Alport Dale "Bleaklow's prized possession". A walking experience to be savoured.
