Kids these days don’t know as they’re born!! Brilliant walk none the less. Walked back along road then original PW route back to Standedge. 16 miles round trip. Hot day - the Diggle Hotel was most welcome when I got back!

It could be found high up in the middle of the moors above Brow Grains by the Wicken Stones, nearly 1400 feet above sea level, heading towards West Nab, and had lived here, safely, for untold thousands of years. But then, on Whitsun Monday morning in either 1827 or 1828, there came, wrote Joseph Hughes (1866), “some half-dozen masons (who) planned and executed the work of destruction for a frolic. They first endeavoured to accomplish it by blasting it with gunpowder and, on the failure of this scheme, they fetched tools from Deer Hill, with which they drilled a hole and then wedged it, when the stone fell with a tremendous crash, hardly allowing the man on its summit who was drawing in the wedge to escape without injury.” ""PITY SHOULD HAVE CRUSHED HIM"

Had been here before several years earlier, but had not logged it. It was such just a beautiful afternoon I had to take a detour off the M62 to visit it. There are really magnificent views from this trig point from the Clwydian Hills (and the Cheshire Plain) to the west and the Vale of York to the east

little did i know i'd finish the day on a depressing note. The situation is lovely for this kind of dreary moor, however some nobheads have rocked the rocking stone off its plinth and it now lies amongst broken remains. It looks very recent, by the cleanliness of the scratches and rock dust. evidence of a barbq all points to some solstice stupidity.10 000 years it's probably been perched there since the last ice age, and it takes half a hour of dumb thuggery to wreck it. perhaps they were p#ssed off because they were outwitted by a sheep and had to take out their frustration on something. just down from the trig is a friendly bit of graffitti daubed on a rock. Oh well, and i was so enjoying my discovery of a rich vein of trigs on LR sheet 110- never bothered with it much b4 as it's a right trek accross bradford and hudds after work. father ted might like to know there's tons for me to do here now!

Visited loads of times. Today this was on a bit of a ramble (in the true sense of the word) from Marsden across Pule Hill and Broadhead Moss to turn left at the road to reach the embarrasingly cheap refreshment caravan at Wessenden Head (tea, hot choc and x2 great parkin all for £1.60!! Open weekends & Bank Holidays). Unfortunately what started out as a sunny spring day turned into wicked mist halfway across Broadhead Moss and on reaching the trig visibilty was about 50 yards at best. Finished the walk across the open moor to reach the top route heading back down the Wessenden Valley into Marsden. Update 21/06/2009 - there is now a huge section of the moor from Shooters Nab on Deer Hill Moss across to Horsley Head Moss & Scope Moss that has been fenced off and marked as being part of the rifle range - apparently the Ramblers Association are disputing this. NCOF!
