Lovely spot, parked in Draycott and then followed the West Mendip Way up to the ridge, then lovely hazy views walking along through the access land. A good day for gliding too, with 8 in the air over the pillar from the airfield to the N. The ROC post was a nice surprise, looks to be in good condition and shaft closed by a bolted piece of ply. Also a locked corrugated ex-military looking shed and the remains of a observing post.

The pillar is situated next to a dry stone wall that has been maintained with breeze blocks and close to a couple of sheds; one of green painted corrugated iron, the other a partly roofed prefab concrete shed. There is evidence of other structures on the site in the past. The unimproved grass land of the site is part of the Rodney Stoke SSSI although gorse is taking over much of the area. A gliding club is nearby. The pillar has no plug and has FB BsM 3250. A track runs by a barrow and through the gorse to reach the pillar from the east. Looking out over the southern scarp of the Mendips the view takes in the Somerset Levels, Glastonbury Tor, Blackdown Hills, Quantocks, Brent Knoll and Steep Holm. The outline of some of the Exmoor and Welsh Hills can just be made out. Looking across the Mendip plateau the view goes from Beacon Batch across numerous Tumuli on the sky line around Priddy to the Wells Transmitter, its top shrouded in cloud.
