Another popular site for walkers on this hot day.I could see the new Queensferry Bridge.

Immediately turned left and followed the path uphill until it intersected with a track. Turned sharp right onto another grass path that led easily to the trig on the summit. Expansive views all round. Descended to Slateford and took the canal path back into the city to make a round of it.

From the end of Wester Hill road, not ideal, better to go from part way along (NT 2316 6998) where the busses stop as there's a FP from there - my return route. Pillar has some slight damage to one vertical edge otherwise good; top cap missing, plug looks as though it's asphalt with some fine mortar round the edges; rear sight hole open. Extensive panoramic views of the city and its surrounds.

My local, a brisk 10 minutes walk from home, though the NO TRESPASSING signs do discourage casual visits. In practice, have never encountered any problems from the golfers. Despite a little damage to the northwest edge, and some ground erosion around the base, the pillar is sound. A pleasant walk up a little hill, with great views in all directions from the summit, and some interesting circular depressions near the top. Spoilt only slightly by the amount of broken glass littering the ground and the graffiti on the pillar.

Built 25th February 1943 as a town secondary station in SecBlock NT48, Edinburgh. Trig pillar in good condition but with chunk out of one corner, long since painted over. Spider centre is plugged with cement. Flush bracket faces east. Rear sighting hole open, others plugged. Wester Craiglockhart Hill is probably the least visited of all of Edinburgh's inner city summits. There are notices (erected by the private golf club which leases this hill) discouraging public access. Such notices have no legal standing under Scottish Law and should be ignored. The summit and trig pillar are quite separate from the golf course below. Wester Craiglockhart Hill is in the southwest of the city approximately 3 miles from the centre. There are views across the city and to all other neighbouring hills. Wester Craiglockhart Hill is an extinct volcano which is thought to have erupted lavas and ash, 350 million years ago. Regular visitor to this one since I was a wee laddie. 02/05/2005: lots of changes in the surroundings - City Hospital is now replaced by executive flats and 1m+ housing. Firrhill High School is all but rebuilt. The Former Craiglockhart Hydropathic (later a convent) is now part of Napier University and is boasting new buildings. The cylinders of Granton Gasworks are gone, as is Capelaw Court, one of the Oxgangs high rise blocks which I watched being blown up on 17/04/2005. Meggetland playing fields are being churned up by developers for housing - another brilliant outcome by the seemingly dodgy bods who make decisions to allow that sort of thing. The MEGC which GOMLs this area is now reduced to posting flyers through letter boxes, presumably in a bid to increase membership. Otherwise nothing much has changed around here. More recent visits 07/01/2006 and 7/01/2007, GRP.
