I wasn’t sure how I felt about knocking on someone’s door to ask to look at the Trig as it was my first Trig on private property but was only in the area for the day, so I thought I’d at least head there and take it from there. Luckily female homeowner was in the front garden and we got talking and she happily showed me the trig. Now home, I’m going to send her a card to say thank you. Thought this might also show what she does in letting us into her garden is appreciated.

If only every trig visit on private land was this pleasant an experience. On our way into Newcastle so I knocked on the door of 15 Wedmore Rd and asked if I could see the Pillar. The guy who lives there was only too pleased to let me through the garage into the garden. The pillar is in excellent condition, but sadly the views are severely compromised to say the least. He said there had been a few visits this year, and he was thinking of obtaining an old theodolite to sit on top of it. Despite the location, I've scored hit highly because the home owner was so agreeable.

Pillar resides at end of rear garden of #15 Wedmore Rd. Possible to view it over the fence, but this is becoming damaged by visitors, best to call at the house. The lady obligingly allowed me through her garage to access the trig, there was a willingness and she was very friendly, but sensed she may have been getting a little fed up with hosting a trig pillar - perhaps more so with the fence at back being damaged. Pillar retains original centre cap, lightly indented lettering; rear sight hole open. No views, other than the garden.

He asked the prof if he could remove trig but was advised against so this one nearly came to grief. He thought trig marked highest point in Newcastle and also it was built before reservoir and was originally open fields. I warned him others might be interested in visiting but he seemed unconcerned.

I searched for this pillar and could not find it. There is a large unfenced covered reservoir to the south of the public footpath which runs east/west behind the houses. It did not occur to me that it would be in somebody's garden on the north side of the path, away from the true summit. For six years, I had assumed that the trig had been lost to the covered cistern. The trig symbol still appears on the maps, so I consulted the OS about it in Dec'03 and was informed that it is extant in a back garden (Iain having now confirmed this, 6/01/2004). OS say it was built 6/07/47, and is fb No S4105. Presumably the trig was there long before these houses were built. As trig pillars get rarer, and if this pillar is kept in good order, S4105 should add value to the property whose garden it occupies in time to come, as a monument to 20th Century mapping.
