First visit, parked up by the cattle grid on the minor road between Westgate and Newbiggin-in-Teesdale. Much easier going than thought it would be, a week of baking hot weather had dried out the going underfoot and the ATV track across the moor meant no real issues with the terrain. Fantastic weather and excellent views. Pillar in a bit of a sorry state, in as bad shape as the nearby Killhope Law - were they both constructed with same batch of concrete mix?!

Followed a quad bike track from the parking spot at Swinhope Head, this faded but easily picked up a track next to the fence which was followed almost right up to the trig point. Only a couple of wet patches but far better than expected from some of the previous logs. There is a bigger track across the top which appears to drop down into the valley below Swinhope Head. A super viewpoint and enjoyed more than expected. Off to Black Hill next then on to Fendrith Hill.

Last maintained by the OS in August 1983. SITE VISIT: Approached from WNW. Parked on west side of unclassified road at Swinhope Head, NY898331. Two trig route, east to junction of fences at NY906334 then north to Black Hill and back first. Then SE from junction of fences to summit. Pillar worse for wear and somebody tried for the whole spider long ago. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 255° WSW. Three sight holes open, innards blocked with debris, NW sight plugged. On our return, GOML waited in his 4x4 beside my parked car for a word. Something about out of date prohibitation notices for access land which had not been heeded. Having followed boundary fences at all times no 'local rules' were broken.
