From Surrender Bridge, a superb circular walk taking in the left overs of the lead mining industry. Sunny, mild, dry ground and good views; not bad for mid Feb. Shame the pillar is so close up to the wall. Accompanied by youngest son James. He did this walk barefoot followed by a dip under the waterfall near Scar Houses, Thwaite. Me, I'm old fashioned, I like wearing boots and keeping dry.

The last one I could do from home. Cycled, with much difficulty, to Surrender Bridge, locked bike up and followed the FP through the abandoned mine workings round to the summit of Great Pinseat, last bit was through heather bogs which were mercifully dry. Pillar is on the north side of the wall but it is quite easy to clamber over. Back through the heather to follow the FP round and back to the road. Diverted at the end to follow the old flue back down. Horrible bike ride back, and, schoolboy error, forgot my money so had to get my wife to meet me at the King's Head in Gunnerside, where I undid all the good work by downing a few Old Peculiars. Just about managed the three mile bike ride back to Muker.
