In Bolton to see my old college mate Johnathon, who lives in the Smithills area; so it seemed natural to wander up Smithills Dean Rd and then up Coalpit Rd. Took a wide berth of Lomax Wifes Farm once we reached the rough grazing. Pillar wasn't at the top of the hill, but had great views over Bolton. Turned out Johnathon hadn't been up here despite being in the area for 40 years. My work here was done. Oh, and I also replaced the flowers.

An evening walk from Walker Fold car park to Old Harpers and Whimberry Hill trigpoints. Up Burnt Edge and then back across to the Old Harpers trigpoint avoiding the deer fences. Then across to Dean Mills Reservoir on the path, just then a 0.3 mile walk over the access land to the Whimberry Hill trigpoint, as the light was fading and a beautiful view over the Bolton skyline. Not too rough coming from the reservoir so long as you pick your route wisely. No flowers on the trigpoint when I arrived so I took my photos in the fading light. I then spotted them on the ground a bit off, probably blown out in the recent winds. So I replaced them before I left.

Thought the route through the Access Land might be a bit tricky so decided the best option was to ask at the Farm. Parked up in the Horrocks Wood car park and walked back down Scout Rd towards Coal Pit Rd. At the junction made the mistake of following the old Miners Track through the gate which appeared to lead directly up to the farm. Field was wet and it wasn't really a defined path despite being shown as a track on the OS map. As we approached the farm apologised to the farmer for trespassing and asked if we could see the pillar. He was quite agreeable and offered to walk us up to it as the route wasn't straight forward. The trick is to bypass Lomax Wife's Farm and take the gate straight ahead on the track then cut up the hill. There are cow trails to follow so the going is fairly easy. On the way the farmer, John is his name, told us the flowers are for his wife who died in 2018 and has her ashes scattered there. Real flowers are eaten by the cows, hence the plastic ones. Had a very nice chat with John and he kindly posed for a photo with us. Great views down over sunlit Manchester. John explained that the easy way back is just down the farm lane to rejoin Coal Pit Ln.

Lomax Wife's Farm is apparently the highest house in Bolton! Walked up farm track past Haslam's Farm bagging the benchmark and into the field to the right of Lomax Wife's Farm. The owner spotted us and asked if we were lost. We explained what we were doing and the kind lady escorted us to the pillar with her dog. She explain that the farmer at Haslam's Farm wouldn't be happy if he spotted us up here but now looking at the map this pillar is on the very edge of open access land anyway?

Shock horror weather, think I should take up indoor bowls. Asked @ Haslam's Farm, it's on their land, farmer very co-operative.

vgc, no cap or plug. Grey view, rushy pasture with rhododendron invading. Public access woodland to S. Last of a set of 4 on way back from a conference, just after the rain arrived.

Asked at the farm to the south of the pillar. No problems. On Rhododendron covered hill. Good condition, no plug, may actually be on Open Access land, but I came up the private lane

Parking for one possibly two cars where the open access land comes down in a narrow spur to the road. Easy if wet out and back that could be combined into a somewhat wetter visit to Rivington if time allows from the same start point. Trig just off the wall line overlooking a small farm with signs of rhodedendrons in the area
