Parked on Saxton Lane. From a gap in the fence along the A162, entered the field to the south of the trig field. Was then able to access the trig field via a gap in the fence. From there, walked up a steep hill to the pillar. The pillar is close to the location of the Battle of Towton, which was fought in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses. The bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil, it led to Lancastrian Henry VI being deposed by Yorkist Edward IV

Pillar history: Built on the 28th of October 1937, at a cost of £5 18s 3d. Last maintained by the OS in August of 1986.

Visited whilst 'enjoying' a 6-mile Frank Wilkinson walk from Saxton; after dreadful flooded pasture at Scarthingwell we stalked along the A162 and cut straight up the hill. The field was redundant stubble with no livestock or crops to disturb or damage, so a straightforward trot to the summit and the pillar. The trig sits in a lovely vantage point at a field corner under a knarled old tree, and commands excellent views - including down to the 1461 Battle of Towton site. The pillar is in great condition, and we returned as carefully as possible between the tilth. A superb, wonderful trig.

Trig in VERY GOOD condition brightly painted white (thanks, RockKnocker and crew) with good views all round, particularly S and E with power stations in the distance. Could see Church Fenton airfield to the E with hot air balloon preparing for sunset take off, and what a great sunset it was.
