Parked in a lay-by a little past the trig going in a north-easterly direction, then crossed the road and clambered over some recently cut trees & branches to enter the field. Then a short stroll up to the pillar which retains its original cap with shallow lettering, but couldn't determine the state of the sight-holes due to the pillar's sunken position.

After reading previous logs decided to attack this from the rear, which proved a success as was able to spend some time to clear away a substantial amount of hedgerow without traffic/safety concerns on a busy A354. Parked 500m NE on wide grass verge at ST 85514 01162. RoW through wide hedgerow into field then followed field boundary to trig. After clearing a copious amount of thorn, bramble and ivy a slightly damaged pillar was revealled. One top edge has been broken away leaving an exposed spider arm otherwise all good. Original cap in place , indented lettering; no sight holes determined. Photo of FB easily obtained despite FB facing the road. Good views W, NW & N.

Horrendous hedge at this time of year. Eventually found it from the roadside by prodding with a walking pole. I reckon it is about 4m NE from the point opposite the roadsign.

This is almost a lost cause as it is now even more deeply entombed in the hedge - note FollowMeChaps' advice on the road sign as it is really difficult to find. Even with secateurs only just managed to prune out the plug (metal cap, shallow letters) and part of the FB, condition of rest of pillar and the s/holes indeterminate. If you ignore the hedge and the road noise, the views of rolling Dorsetshire are quite good.

As I headed on this road I noticed a trig on memory map next to the road. I overshot and pulled in a field gateway and then walked back no pavements and cars whizzing past at high speed. Initially could not find it, but then discovered it deep in the middle of a thick hedgerow. Managed to stick the camera in for pictures!

The pillar is sited in a hedge between the narrow verge of the A354 trunk road and an arable field of 1 foot high grass; it is best viewed from the field. The top northeast edge of the pillar is missing; it has a metal cap with deep lettering and FB S5872, best seen from the road. The woodland on Okeford Hill can be seen in the distance to the north, Charborough Tower in the southeast and the Purbeck Hills to the south. Several classic cars passed in the direction of Dorchester during my visit and I encountered more later on between Blandford and Salisbury.

Situated hard against A354 which at this point hardly has a verge. Found eventually on the field side very hidden in hedge. Unfortunatly discovered flush bracket faced road. Eventually braving numerous scratches and thorns got camera to other side and fired off several shots before finally securing a shot of the number! Retains plug. Would say at least at this time of year impossible to see from road.
