Trig in good condition at the summit of Criffel. Excellent views of the Solway Firth, the Lakes and Dumfries and Galloway. Up from New Abbey via Knockendoch and down via the new path and Loch Kindar.

Parked at Ardwell nx970634 honesty box. Well sign posted and clear footpath all the way to top. 2hours up and down return route. Cloud hovered all day over the summit sadly no views. Pillar has a crack around lower third. Also spider plug is missing. Met a few walkers en route.

Walked from Newabbey, lovely walk. New paths on hill, not as muddy as previous logs say! More direct ascent is all on well made track - quite steep and probably not so nice a walk.

Didn't use the shiny new path, took the longer older route instead from Mid Glen via the summit of Kockendoch. A glorious walk, with the April weather good enough to give wide views (though chilly). Snow visible lying on the higher Lake Distric fells.

Headed up the "new" path from Ardwall Mains. Motorway all the way to the top. A hill that's been on the to do list for years. A bit cool and breezy on the top and views a bit hazy so we'll have to come back on a really clear day.

An amazing beautiful new gritted path with stone steps embedded every so often in the path, all the way from the car park at the farm up the hill to the trig pillar. Never walked on such a well designed path as this one up the pillar. Amazing views all around on a beautiful warm, sunny day. Well worth the walk up.

An unwise expedition given the weather forecast so it's very much a look at that interesting stretch of sand experience. The footpath works mentioned in earlier logs including 2010 appear to have gone for the rest I wish I'd taken today. Ridiculous this hill is not being looked after, I know there are purists who oppose flagging but all I can say after a wonderful 3 weeks in Scotland it makes me proud of the good work done in Derbyshire and Yorkshire to protect the hills. Urrgh.



Poor hill, I'd be happy to donate to any footpath works...

Walked up from New Abbey, the route was very boggy and we encountered adders and loads of flies. It was a relief to get to the top where the views are stunning. Glad we did it but have no plans to go up again.

Always wanted to do this having spent many years seeing it from the lakes.Walked up from ardwall a bloke walking his dog quipped it goes boggy halfway up and the mist will come in !He was right about the bogginess but the views were clear and great trig was in vgc cold wind though had to put on gloves.

Passed painterman61 and Earby Rambler when descending although didn't know they were triggers! Nice hill, lot of prominence. Good, well-made path up through the forest then muck. Large chip from RHS top edge and horizontal fracture extending all faces at flush bracket level. Extensive panorama. Was sure I'd taken the usual photos, but none found on my camera, just a general summit shot - bizarre. ***Revisited 7 Sep 2021 with my nephew Andrew. Took some photos of the pillar this time.

Good condition pillar atop Criffel. Marked as slightly damaged due to minor chipping to the top and a large crack appearing around the entire pillar at FB height. FB faces north-ish with south-ish sighthole open only. Cap missing and no plug present. Plaque affixed to FB side. Accessed from the north via Ardwall. The path works have been completed up to the tree line after which it's pretty boggy going right to the top. Superb views today especially to the north. Lakes were clagged over.

3 mile walk up and down Criffel, walked up normal very muddy path to summit, we started in perfect sunshine, when we got to the top you could barely see anything so foggy/cloudy, shame really we heard the views were spectacular from here!

Up from walkers car park at Ardwall. Well made path until the gate in the fence to the open fell is reached,once through the new looking gate the route directly up the hillside is reputedly very muddy but was frozen solid today. Nice view of the sun as it started to set but no other views due to the haze. Trig in good condition but a rather wet area to negotiate between it & the huge cairn.

Nice walk half path half bog. Sunny day. Met a man on way down who started walking up Criffell on his 70th birthday and has walked it three times a week since He has done it over 1000 times and is still going strong - Unbelieveable! Well done old man!

Path works are still on progress, beyond the trees it's still very boggy. On the way back I followed the very pleasant ridge north over the small top, this gives a much better line of approach.

Very boggy path undergoing extensive works in the forest, should be much easy by the autumn. Summit itself has fantastic views and dominates the area despite its relatively diminutive height.

vgc, GPS plaque, remains of what I think was an old brown plastic cap, with thin layer of cement on top also broken. From NE, car park at Ardwall, track, bouldery path, a bit boggy beyond the forest fence but less so than I remember from 15 years earlier. First of the day, hazy view, cold wind. I recorded no damage other than a few slight blemishes in the concrete.

Seeing Criffel so many times from the Lakeland Fells I just had to pop over the Solway for a look in the opposite direction and I was not disappointed magnificent views, walking up by Craigrockall Burn clambering over Cliffels granite boulders makes for an interesting ascent recent tree harvesting and natural regrowth giving a fresh airy feel, wonderful.

Approached from northeast. Parked in car park at NX970634. Path all the way to summit. The pillar is in good condition. Spider plugged with cement. Flush bracket faces northeast, compass measurement 37°. Vented through SW sight hole. Too hazy for view on day of visit.

Came up in darkness and cloud cover through the very boggy path. Pillar is in good condition with a bituminous top plug. Moon broke through cloud and great night time views to the south.

Magical conditions which persisted for several days over Christmas: fog all over the Lakes and SW Scotland, but above about 400m you were in glorious sunshine, looking down on it as if from a plane. Only the highest hills were poking through, brocken spectres - the lot!

Always referred to this hill from Lakeland summits. Now been to its top, know what to expect. Boggy, slip potential, Easy route from Ardwall mains. set Geocache (SOTA) and waymark. Hot and humid so views not the best.

Muddiest track up a fell I have ever encountered. some serious work needs doing on this before somebody sinks in and never comes out alive lol. Walked this again on 10/10/20 this time from Abbey Village. The path down to Loch Kindar at the present time is being repaired

One of my first trig point vists. I'd long wanted to climb Criffel as it is often visible from the West Cumbrian coast. Not sure of exact date of visit and no FB close up as I hadn't thought of visiting trig points anywhere at this stage. Not the most enjoyable fell walk I've done as the route was boggy. I lost a new walking pole on this walk too. Grr! Revisited on an uncomfortably hot and humid 12th July 2005 to get proper photos. Never again.

Hill always looks higher than it really is, its so isolated. The usual way up is a nightmare of bog - avoid! I did not and found it a flounder. Good views of the Solway and Lake District. Usually a Doonhamer in situ.
