Called in at the farm, farmer directed me through field gate (NY 2268 6194). Muddy cattle pasture. Pillar accessed from SE side hedgerow. An original centre cap is retained, deeply indented lettering; RHS sight hole open, rear not checked. Extensive panorama. Cut benchmark on roadside farm bldg.

Asked at Bowness Hall and very friendly farmer gave us directions through two gate as the best way to access trig. The fields are very wet and muddy at the moment. This trig point is 1150 miles from Rome according to the road sign in Bowness.

Parked at farm permission granted sad to say flash the old dog has passed on.Again lots of mud and wet grass trig in vgc with cap fine views.Talking to the farmer about walking in fields with cattle and he told me he always carries a stick with him and if a cow or bull gets to close you give it a sharp tap on the nose!

Good condition pillar above Bowness Hall at field boundary. FB faces SE-ish with NW-ish sighthole open only. Cap present with sunken lettering. Plaque present above FB. Pillar painted recently. Good views. Asked permission at farm which was readily given. Took the farmer's dog for a quick walk up there!

Another smashing view.. pillar protected by a single barbed wire and clearly looked after by auld Farmer Richard.. talked WWII with his memories of spitfires chasing the hostile bombers on their way to my Clydeside home! :-O Everything in place with only the North sight open. :-)

Bowness Hall ..with added history lesson! :D

as I was striding up the field from the south, the farmer walked across from the west and asked me what I was doing. told him, checking condition and photographing. Told me he gave it fresh coat of white paint couple of years ago. asked if I was ordnance survey? No, enthusiasts group, Trig Pillar Inspection company!!

Asked at farm and was told Wellies but not having we set off and with wet feet reached our goal

Farmer advised the use of wellies and the loan of his loppers, he was not wrong. Also suggested we take Flash his dog for a walk, but Flash was not interested.

Parked 100 yards from hall.Helpfull at the farm,and they let me through farm yard.A o/s person had camped overnight and he realinged it.Trig has metal plate with 1999,and asking you to report, if it is damaged

HISTORY: Pillar built around March/April 1952, exact date and cost not on record. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY45/6 within the Carlisle block during 1953. Levelled for height in 1971. Last routinely maintained by the OS in 1977 but now maintained as a GPS passive station. SITE VISIT: Called in at farmhouse, access is through yard and was gladly given. Grazing field populated with very sociable cattle. Pillar in boundary hedge sporting a GPS plate, and in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~139. Vented through SW sight hole.

Park at farm where a grand old fellow directed me to the Trig no problem,He also showed me his collection of old bricks,he used to have more but a bloke putting up a dividing wall in one of the buildings ran out of bricks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
