From the Mosspaul layby. Ascended part way up Comb Hill then skirted round to the col trying not to lose height and finally straight up to the trig. Low cloud spoiled distant views but was clearing fast. As it turned out, if I'd waited another half an hour it would have completely gone, but hindsight's a great thing and there were other trigs to bag!

Parked at the end of the cattle grid near Blackcleuch and followed the track to the Comb Hill mast then on to the pillar. Perfect weather giving great views. Passed the Steve Hislop memorial cairn on the way in near to where he died in a helicopter accident in 2003.

First visit, Photographed on a very wet day in March 2000. This was the first time I encountered a GPS plate. The pillar is just on the Dumfriesshire side of the county boundary fence. There is an infrequent bus service down on the A7. The nearest location Mosspaul Hotel is marked on the bus timetable. If coming by car, use official layby, not the verges. Previous traffic accidents on this road have been blamed on carelessly parked vehicles blocking visibility near farm entrances. I did read of a GOML farmer in this area, but he did not catch me! I believe there is also a local woman with a plummy accent who talks down to walkers in a condescending manner, addressing them as "people like you". Built c1936. as Primary station PP317. Photographed 24/03/2000, GRP.
