From The Flatt (parking at NY 5597 7842). Long Crag first then on to here. Nice remote feel about the place. Pillar retains an original centre cap, raised lettering; front sight hole open, LHS plug degrading. Extensive panoramic views. The old pillar, toppled and broken, lies a metre or so to the NE.

Parked in the large space just before the gate to the forest at The Loan. Followed track up to the quarry WSW of trig. A track leads from the N edge of the quarry to the open moor. Went over The Hewn Block and headed straight to pillar across heather and tussocks. A remote a location as it gets in England with a superb extensive vista. Returned via Long Crag.

Trekked across from the Long Crag trig... was actually easier than it looked and took less than an hour. The wall then fence (not fully shown on our map) along the ridge avoids most of the mires and there's a quad track some of the way, the rest is tussocky moorland. Very isolated, good views down across the endless forest. Returned same way then down the Access Land keeping close to the private forest.

I parked at NY 56155 78518 and then made the straightforward walk up the forest track to the sharp bend at the top before taking the short section of feint path and exiting the forest at NY 58843 81035. I then took a right for a short steep section alongside the fence before hacking it across the moorland to the trig point. Mixed weather, some sun, some rain, some wind but a pleasant day. It feels very isolated at the top.

a bit of a slog from anywhere. I came from kielder just up from calvert trust i didn't park there but i think it would be OK. ready for a long forest trek and a heather bash. not ready for THIS though. must have been 80 deg. got to the end of forest track, and spotted a 150yd fire break direct to looming moor. for some reason i had a blinding bit of inpiration and took a gps reading AT THE EXIT to the moors- as it's the only way in/out for miles i needed it later! basically followed fence lines over horrendous deep heather and tussocks. there is indeed a new fence or two on the top- one goes to summit area. flies were really really out in force- desperate for a salt fix. ran out of water somewhere on the way back- got some from the cab of a forestry vehicle- thanks mister. just too hot for this kind of thing

A bit of a slog from Long Crag, following wall/fence lines and then a bearing NE from 594797 where the fence heads northish. The area is not as afforested as the map suggests and there are new fence lines present which is a bit confusing. There are the remains of the old pillar and and the old base complete with centre tube is directly adjacent to the new pillar. Excellent views. A hard walk but worth the effort as this was our highest unvisited trig pillar in England and Wales and a primary to boot. GPS plaque and plug with raised lettering.

High number as the pillar is a replacement for a previous pillar, a primary by the looks of it (S1553)that has been toppled. The remnants are scattered about, but no sign of a bracket. The old pillar should be added to the DB and I will log it as soon as I get any info as to its number. 10862 is in good condition and the plug has raised lettering. Sighty Crag may be a pig to get to, but is a wonderful place when you are there. Fine sandstone boulders and a big sky!
