Been wanting to do this and Alphin Pike trigs for a while. Left Sheffield at 7:00am with grey clouds to drive past Stocksbridge in low cloud and 20 yard visibility. I went with it, parking in Hollingworth, walking through the murk following obvious tracks, walls and pylons and easily found the trig, but no views and no sign of the cairn as marked on the map. Sods law, not twenty minutes later on the way to Alphin, the W winds blew the murky cloud and damp eastwards, suddenly revealing the Cheshire Plain and Manchester. Shouldn't have been so eager...

Great circuit from Oak Gate - reservoirs, oak, birch, willow then excellent views even in the murk - Mow Cop to Hail Storm, south Pennine looks wonderful, Manchester looks grim and imposing - only bit of colour is the airport runway and Ikea! Happy New Year.

View up to Quick Edge and Mossley, Blackstone Edge - the ancient castle of Buckton nearby (now mainly a quarry - eeh it's grim up Tameside!
To the grand Derbyshire peaks - note ripples in puddle, some ice about too - atmospheric
Cheshire/Staffs (just), Lancs, Greater Manchester - Wales has disappeared alas
