Butts Lane was closed to traffic this morning (trust us to choose this day) so we parked in Melville Lane and walked up. Beautiful views of the South Down countryside all round but a little hazy in the distance. A good walk !

Some people say it's lucky if a bird poos on you. Some foul fowl managed to target my less-than-a-day-old white t-shirt whilst I was at this trig. Not impressed. I do hope bird mess doesn't stain. Anyway... parked in the all-too-appropriately named Hill Road, and trudged breathlessly up the footpath till it met the grassy summit; from there it was a far more leisurely walk to the trig. Met local dog owner whilst there, who bribes her dogs with treats if they walk as far as the pillar. Good to see these old concrete blocks still have their uses!

Directions: Butts Lane postcode is BN20 9EN. It's two lanes but steep and fairly narrow. The car park is about 1Km up and charges by the hour. The trig is 10-15 minutes walk further along the ridge. Head approximately South as Slateloose said in another log. On the way, pass a radio mast and a memorial to a bomber crew whose plane crashed here in the second war. The aim of my visit was to test an Emlid GPS device when receiving corrections from the igs-ip.net NTRIP station at Hertmonceaux Castle. Good weather and nice views when I got to the car park but by the time I got to the trig, a thick mist had come in. Visibility and GPS performance fell markedly. Most of the time my device could only see a couple of satellites, only occasionally four, which is the minimum for a fix. (In the car park it could see about ten.) The position it gave me was 557713.92, 100938.917, height 201.594m, so out by about 1m East, 10cm North, 30cm height. Not bad because it's about 12Km from the station, and I've read that NTRIP correction starts to lose accuracy around 10Km from the source.

This is probably the first Trig Point I ever visited, I first saw this Trig many years ago when on a practice hike with the 23rd Eastbourne Scouts. I later became a regular visitor to this Trig on morning cycles, afternoon walks and even went up to visit it with best mate Joe after a night of 70's disco clubbing. (Other visitors to this Trig are Joe, Louise, Will, Scott, Chew, Dan and Nat). It has had an interesting couple of paint jobs; the first featured colourful flowers and a rainbow and the second featured a green sheep and a long man.
