(1573) Tackled this one from the public footpath between #44 and #42 Fort Hill Road. A decent sized area of woodland in NE Sheffield. A bit of history attached to the place; From Iron age forts to WW2 anti-aircraft emplacements. An extant pillar would have been the icing on the cake - shame the pieces that had survived couldn't be left, if not in situ, then closeby and safe. I doubt anyone else would have carted them off. Ah well... Pillar history: Built on the 30th of June 1938, cost and last maintained date not given in the archives. FB was S2134 and marked as destroyed in August 1967.

Nice green area for walking but no pillar and no remains found - had a rootle in the heather. Spoke to the Ranger who had worked there for the last 8 years and he hadn't come across anything. Earthen walls of fort are visible.

Tump summit visit. Found a lump of old trig in the heather a few metres from the spot. Which, though heavy, I carried off home to add to my bits of Haugh hill Pollock people are welcome to come and view various trig bits + plus other trig top ceramic art works to view too.. 81 North Moor York YO329RX and if you enter the North Moor kidney shaped estate from the North Lane end, my house 81, is first on left. There's also a full size trig pillar steel skeleton sculpture in my back garden.

Made a climb of it by parking at Meadowhall, then across the Don and a steep climb up Jenkins Road. A paved track runs up to the site of the hill fort and can't be missed, an information board about Wincobank Hill is sited at the entrance. Another board is located at the site of the hill fort and this is the area where I assume the pillar was located. Sadly it is gone and I found no traces. The site is still worth a visit though for historical interest and for the views over Meadowhall and the Don Valley. A little urban oasis, the site deserves a trig what a shame it has gone!
