Tried to bag this one back in March in thick snow, approached from the west, from Kielder Castle. By the time we'd reached Plashnetts I knew I would not get to the TP and back to the car in time to start my shift at work, so had to give up and turn back. Tonight, on a beautiful July evening I set off for Kielder after work and approached from the east, from the dam. The car park meter doesn't seem to work at 19:30! Pretty easy to find using just map and TP intuition, and what an utter delight finding this one is! A really magical spot, though never going to score top marks for height or views...

Heavy snow meant no trigs this morning, so visited Hareshaw Linn instead. Once the snow had passed over and the roads cleared a little I headed to Kielder Dam. Followed the North Haul Road and part of the Lakeside Way path to Whinny Hill then straight up through the plantation. The trig must be used as part of an orienteering course as there was a sheet with a grid reference (presumably of the next objective, a waterfall 0.6 miles due N) hanging from a nearby tree. Returned via the Lakeside Way path which is much improved since Clochandighter's visit.

Parked as other visitors at the dam car park (now 5 all day unless you can get there and back in an hour in which case it's a pound). Followed the lakeside path which was busy due to a cycling event, came back via the old coal mines.

Free parking in lay-by @ NY708883 (car park 4.50 from 6am to 9pm!). Found firebreak up Whinny Hill, rough going - probably due to summer vegetation. Plantation itself very easy thru' mature trees.

If Tolkien did trig points, this would be one of his. Moss encrusted, in a small forest clearing. Walked from the dam car-park, using lakeside path/biketrack, which is now in good condition. Last 400m was freestyle up the hill through plantations, well grown trees so going not difficult, though might have had GPS problems if we had relied on it. Lots of wrecked trees from the recent storms, but not near the trig fortunately.

Connor at the Trig It was very dark in the woods even in the day time.
The Trig ! We liked this pillar, Kielder is a great place to visit.

Very dark wood. Pillar moss covered but in good condition. Spider centre open. All sight holes below moss level and left undisturbed. Minor moss removal at ground level to uncover flush bracket. FB faces NNW ~343. Tertiary station in Block NT72, Jedburgh. Completed 9th May 1954. Mature coniferous wood, trees easily negotiated, but dark for photographic purposes. Nearest parking is in the Northumbrian Water Board cark park at NY707882 where they charge an extortionate 3 no matter how short your visit. Luckily the only ticket dispenser was displaying "Machine Out of Use" in its LCD. Route from car park to Wind Hill can be via track or footpaths as shown on maps, then firebreaks. The track route is longer in distance but quicker in time - boggy areas to negotiate on path route. GPS signals poor. Photographed 16/10/2007, GRP.

This was the most magical triangulation pillar that I have ever located. And it was done with map and compass alone, too. (I eschew GPS devices, since they tend to take much of the fun out of the process.) It looked as if it hadn't been interfered with for many a year, as is evidenced by the remarkable fungi that are growing atop it. Not wanting to damage this wonderful spot, I refused to climb the trig point (as is my usual procedure).
