Third trig of my jubilee jaunt and, by far, the most gruelling! Parkedat the church at the layby at Whitbeck. Ascended round 'the back way' via Little Fell. Stupendous views of the lake fells to the North and the Cumbrian coast up to St Bees Head. Blowing a bit, especially at the summit. Trig damaged at top as mentioned before with spider very exposed and scratchings. Found bits of the old concrete trig in the surrounding shelter. Cracking hill, had it almost to myself! Descent now and head for Annaside.

Running in the Black Combe Fell Race so had a run past on the way by but a hamstring injury put paid to my race a km further on. As it was such a glorious day I decided to return to Silecroft over the summit so got a closer look and took in the extensive views. Hadn't realised this was a replacement pillar until logging on here so didn't have a look for remains of the original pillar.

What a flipping pig of a route to get to CP2 via Pen End....not the normal or easiest way to arrive at the 600m summit. Magnificent views. Got to give this pillar to the 22 volunteers at Fell Foot parkrun who enabled this event to take place today. We were all over 60 years old. Why isn't the youth of this event stepping up to the mark? Parked in a small layby on A595. Ascended via Wicham Church. Ample parking in grounds of this church. Honesty box for a donation. A lovely walk that provides fantastic views of the west coast from Hodbarrow to Ravensglass throughout. The pillar is protected by a stone built circular shelter. Top of the trig is eroded and core of spider is missing.Good splash of white paint suggested someone is maintaining this popular easy summit. A couple of months on and Black Combe will be purple.

Day 9 of 10 A Bowland and Furness walk. Last trig of this year's hike. Black Combe, often seen from St Bees head, or the coastal railway (usually in mist) we had been heading for this all walk, the peninsulas often taking us away and back towards it. One of those chance of a lifetime moments. So pleased to have a fine day to do it. The ascent from Silecroft via a relatively easy path felt akin to rising from the deep blue sea in a virtual hot air balloon. Lovely, lovely views I will never forget. As for the trig itself it is set within a makeshift wind shelter, damage to top, spider exposed but reset in concrete thankfully. Some moron has stolen the OS plaque and some scratching on the spider itself. And why do some goons feel the need to leave litter at the summit? A day to cherish, its a 10 from Len.

Polite enquiries don't always pay off! Roughed it up through ferns until picking up the mapped path network which leads all the way to the summit.
