(552) First spotted as I drove into Collingham, but it was too early to be knocking on doors asking for permission to visit. Returned after bagging the two nearby churches. The residents at the White House said they wasn't the landowners, but said it would be OK to visit the pillar. The field wasn't too muddy, and it's a relatively short walk from the entrance way to the pillar. Quite a bit of damage on this one. It's certainly been clattered about over the years. Chunks missing and cracks on all sides. Interesting to note the pillar's inner brick construction. Pillar history: Built on the 7th of September 1948, at a cost of 8 14s 10d. Last maintained by the OS in October of 1980.

Pillar is in middle of cropfield, only little shoots at present so visible from the road at present. Open gateway towards the top of the road allowed easy access into the field. One of the lower elevation trigs I've bagged, glad I did before the farmer completes his demolition misson.

Pillar is in the centre of a field and quite visible from the road. To reach it, it is either a matter of climbing a very difficult gate or going through a piece of fencing in the hedge. Carole and I chose the latter and then followed some tractor tracks through growing crops. As others have said pillar has been knocked about a bit revealing some brick work. But it is still standing on something of an island. Best visited between harvest and spring.

A slight diversion from our journey south along the A1, spent a little while driving round the lanes north of Collingham with only GPS for guidance before locating site. Parked by gate and walked across stubble field with setting sun in our faces. I hope the farmer's standard of driving on the public highway is better than his performance in the field, judging by the large chunks missing from the pillar ! Secured the gate with a better knot than the farmer did.
