Main gates locked so no-one on site. Moved car to NE of the site, parking by M55 bridge (SD 4000 3470). Farm track initially, then across pastures to closest point possible (approx 20m) outwith the impressive security fencing. Pillar can be clearly viewed and the FB photographed with a reasonable zoom, although at an angle making it difficult to discern the numbers; obviously no view of the spider of sight holes from here. Had to be satisfied with this... for today.

Good lay-by parking on the reservoir access road south of the M55...Gateway to the steps leading upwards onto the elevated area being open consequence of workmen I asked at the 'hut' for permission to access the trig. Permission granted, I left with a big smile on my face, like a child having just seen Father Christmas...A massive big thank you to Chris, a nice man making possible a memorable 'trig bagging" at Whitprick Hill.

Parked close to the bridge over the M55 and followed the field boundaries to reach the reservoir perimeter fence.I had a cunning plan to outsmart the cctv cameras by disguising myself as a farmer. So complete with body warmer and wellies, I checked the ploughing in a thoughtful pose and moved some big stones to the headland. I have no idea if anybody was watching but I didn't get challenged as a security risk and I did get as close to the pillar as I could without being electrocuted, so I'll call that a result.

Gorgeous Hawthorn blossom, beautiful purple vetch and glorious field of golden buttercups. And all the while to contrasty the peaceful ambience of the visual scene there was the incongruous loud traffic rumble as the M55 to Blackpool is immediately behind the hedge to ones left as I walked to the reservoir.

Well defended, with cameras and electric fence. I contemplated donning a rubber suit and using nylon rope ladders to scale the 4 metre fence, but decided to get my picture through the narrow mesh of the fencing instead. I approached from the lane to the east. Technically, it is unreachable, but I was close enough to claim a close encounter, I'd say.

You can see the trig from here and it is a fairly straight forward walk across the fields. The reservoir has got a 6 feet high wire mesh type fence around it but there is a pedestrian gate which can be climbed over without too much difficulty (no barbed wire on top). Not a very impressive trig considering it's a primary. GPS plaque, tarmac plug.
