Parked up on the grass verge just south of the cattle grid and followed the wall up to the top, nipping through it and over the barbed wire fence to get into the trig field. Nice views of The Howgills, Wild Boar Fell and over Mallerstang. Walked the few feet extra from the pillar to bag the Ash Fell TUMP, then crossed back over the wall and walked up to the cairn before returning to the car. Beer in the superb L'al Nook in Kirkby Stephen afterwards.

Visited en route to a stay in Kirkby Stephen before embarking on The Yoredale Way. We parked up at the side of the A683 just beyond the cattle grid. The drystone wall forms a very useful handrail straight to the pillar at the summit; we hopped over at one of the many broken sections and used the scrubby strip between the field boundary fence as many have. The farmer has left the final return free of barbed wire. Pillar sits a short distance from the wall, and is in excellent condition (not sure I'd agree with the current listed condition, I've seen many far worse than this one) with a full set of metalwork and sumptuous views of the Pennine fells, Howgills and Lakeland beyond. We returned the same way - pillar is on grassy access land and there were no crops or livestock to worry about on our quick visit.

From the N or NW its on access land now so you can just clomp away across the moor if thats your thing - youll need to climb the wall if you dont use the ROW. From the ROW to the NW you will reach the wall towards the NW end of Ash Fell Edge. Do not go through the metal gate straight ahead, immediately before it a gateway on the left (no gate there today) gives access to the moor. Go through & follow the track as it heads briefly diagonally left before veering right to follow the wall approx 50 yards on your right (its much easier than following the wall, something I initially attempted). It eventually turns into a sheep trail and runs adjacent the wall shortly before reaching the trig. I intially made the mistake of going through the metal gate on the ROW & following the wall with it on my left and whilst the short, stubby pillars (not marked on my 2002 OS map) are interesting I had to back-track 3/4 of a mile to get to the other side of the wall (as ted says its marked as an electic fence too when you pass through the metal gate on the ROW - so traverse at your own risk). Really good views in most directions - Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang, Green Bell etc. From KS rly sta. Revisited 02/01/2010 in fairly deep snow when my soul mate insited I pose by the trig. And again 16/02/1010. No cars, on foot x3!
