Parked in the Slaley Forest car park on the B6306, crossed the road and followed a forestry track through the woods until the track goes a sharp left. Crossed to a wall and went through the left hand of three gaps. The trig is about 15 ft into the woods. It's very much overgrown and was initially hard to spot. We circled around to the other side of the woods, where previous visits had been made from, but with all the forestry work going on and the dense nature of the undergrowth it now looks very difficult to get to the trig from that direction.

It is painted bright white. If you get into the trees it's a bit like finding a needle in a haystack.!

A pain to get to now trees have grown in. Took ROW on forestry track then just straight through trees at the shortest point. Lots of tree debris just left in piles making it sketchy. Difficult to find without GPS given thickness of trees. Small clearing where trig is but no views. Not far from Slaley Forest car park and saw cars parked next to the forest track. Feasibly quick to get but will be easier whenever trees are next felled! Recently painted, paint had tun a little, presumably thanks to regent wet weather!

The trees are aligned NE- SW, if you stop at NY98080 54712 on the tree side of the brash barrier and look down each row then you can see the trig and walk down to it. Don't know how long it will take the saplings to fill out the gaps between them then the best way to it might be along the wall.

With my travelling companion sleeping off the effects of the LDWA Hadrian 100, I took the opportunity stretch my tired legs and visit a few of the easier pillars to the S of Hexham. With no prior knowledge I was a bit taken aback to find the forest felled and replanted with new trees up to 5-7 feet tall and extreme brash. A major new, wide forest road had been cut out with a boundary of brash piled up to 6 or more feet high along either side. With only an old 50000 map and compass I estimated the pillar to be about 200m from the road and "paced" in that distance through the chaos then followed the bearing of the road NNW, rather surprising myself by coming on the pillar in what was generally a clearer patch of the felled area. The pillar was only 20-25m from the substantial stone wall boundary to the next forest block to the N. Best way in (in retrospect) : from road at NW end of cleared forest, take broad ,new cut forest driveway SE for 120 paces then climb onto the boundary of brash on the left hand side looking for white painted pillar on about a 70 degree bearing. 7/10 for novelty of the search.

Mickley + Dilston + Winnowshill Common + Barley Hill = less than a couple of hundred metres of walking in total. Parked to the west of Trig Point on the B6306 and a very short walk down forest track and the TP is easily visible (for now). Negotiating the brash is the biggest challenge to this one. Despite the felling of the plantation around the TP the views sadly are not much better than when the TP was surrounded by dense spruce / larch trees!

The block of woodland has now been clear felled, replanted & the pillar is surrounded by 8 foot high piles of brash. The path along the wall from the west is currently inaccessible and closed so the easiest way to access the pillar is to park at the end of the track that comes in from the north west. Follow the track from the car park until it turns sharp left as it approaches the felled area. The trig is then almost in front of you 20 yards the other side of the semi derelict wall. (Although depending on where you cross the wall it may be hidden by piles of bits of dead tree.) If the car park end of the track is flooded as it was today then follow the green walking route through the trees from the carpark until it hits the dirt track then turn right. Its still in excellent condition despite the surrounding devastation - the forestry guys have done a good job in looking after it during their work. Worth visiting now - in about 10 years time this one will be a sod to get to when the trees have grown a bit!
