With James on a very wet windy day. Started from Jubilee Tower up Grit Fell, then Ward's Stone and back to Clogha Pike before looping back round through Appletree. Had a look at The Three Chairs on..slightly to North of ridge in old Quarry. Fine stonework.

This must be one of the shortest routes between pillars (3/12)? Perfect conditions weather wise and I laugh at previous posts calling the area "No Forest of Bogland"...chose the wrong time chaps to visit...gliding/surfing over the dried up bogs. Memories/places gifted the Dozen and remembering volunteer wardening at Slaidburn, where I was introduced to Fray & Bentos pies. One visitor all week. Good planning on my part.

Jubilee Tower, Grit Fell, Ward's Stone trig, Ward's Stone summit & then Mallowdale Pike trig before descending to the Queen's Chair with its pivot. Then followed the boundary fence/wall over to UU Road before following it back to Tarnbrook. Then road walk back to Jubilee Tower.

Walked across the plateau from Wards Stone past the last few remaining peat hags. Not the best views today, but as we returned to Wards Stone's summit the white pillar was illuminated against dark thunder clouds. Very atmospheric and today's highlight.

Day 4 of 10 A Bowland and Furness walk. Continuing on from Wolfhole Crag via the aptly named Brown Syke. This is the highest point of the Forest of Bowland. Pillar in good condition, with OS plaque. My 12th Primary so didn't mind the continuing rain. Keep walking...

HISTORY: Pillar completed around April 1936, exact date and cost not on record. Computed as primary triangulation station PP4 within Figure 2 of the OSGB36 primary network during 1936. Levelled for height in 1948. Maintained by the OS in 1976 and is continues maintained as part of the GPS passive network. SITE VISIT: Approached from west. Four trig circuit from Jubilee Tower. Car park opposite at SD542573. Up via SD556589, Clougha Pike, Wards Stone (560m, west trig) continuing on mapped path to 561m summit. Pillar in good condition. GPS plate fitted. Spider retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces 219° SSW. Vented through SE sight hole. Views in most directions with open outlook to the other trig pillar on Wards Stone. Ingleborough dominates the skyline. Continued to Wolfhole Crag.

Interesting grit outcrops. Good views across to the Yorkshire 3 peaks. Path from Wards Stone passes odd remnant patches of 2 metre thick peat. It would be interesting to know how the plateau lost its peat cover.

A lonely and windswept location today. Clear weather, but little to see other than rolling seas of heather and peat moor. Nearby peat hag looks like a wave rolling into the beach. Great location if you like a quiet walk.

Although this trig point is called Mallowdale Pike, it is in fact two miles away from the actual Mallowdale Pike. It is about 1/2 mile east(ish) of the Ward's Stone trig point, but is apparently 1 metre higher (though it looks lower). Both are on a plateau, so could qualify as the two nearest trig points with no discernable valley between them. See http://www.gps.gov.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=T1SD5958

(not) Mallowdale Pike The real Mallowdale Pike can just about be seen immediately above Toad's head (25/4/5 - no it can't - it is behind the hill shown!). I think Ingleborough is in the background.
