Climbed up from Steel Rigg. Visibility surprisingly good and haze-free, despite the current heatwave. The panoramic views from up here, the highest point on Hadrian's Wall, are absolutely magnificent.

Parked at steel rigg, £3. Visibility almost nowt. Another car drove in and drove straight back out. Friendly horse have me a cuddle and accompanied us until she stopped and looked at me as if to say “no way am I walking up there in this”. Despite the OS map showing my favourite symbol pair- a blue triangle accompanied by blue triangles declaring a stunning view, looking over the wall reminded me of the nothing in the never ending story. In for a penny, in for a pound, we strode on past the car again blindly to Sycamore gap. With the place to ourselves the mist lifted enough for a moody photo.

Walking from Gilsland to Chollerford today and the second day of wall to wall sunshine, spectacular light and visibility. After seeing nobody yesterday, this pillar to Sycamore Gap is perhaps the busiest section on the wall. 1/3 passed en route today and are offered to B&Bs who welcome single occupancy, single nights and don't charge you ridiculous rates.

Resumed Hadrian's Wall Walk (Day 4) from the Steel Rigg car park and arrived here with still a spring in our step. Can't forget our first visit here (Dec 01) Full on Northerly wind with inadequate clothing meant our traumatised, now grown up children, have yet to forgive us.

Parked up to the west of trig in a small lay by this gave about a round trip of about 4 km.The walk started great and by the end it just got better and the views were stunning in the late afternoon sun.Felt like you were walking back in time next to hadrians wall the trig was in good condition many out walking on this section today.

Superb location. Great walk up from the car park to the east. There is an excellent series of five rivets leading up to the TP from the road for benchmark enthusiasts. Brilliant views made even better by terrible weather. It really was like defending the northern border of the empire! Tarmac plug.

Just as we reach the high point and near end of the walk the sun breaks out to the west - all is orange and yellow - Northumbria colours!

Pennine Way Day 4 of 17. Highest point on Hadrian's Wall and great views, although a popular spot. We had hoped to make it to Greenhead, but I'm glad we camped at Winshields farm, a super campsite for walkers. Having both suffered dog bites at Shitlington Hall Farm earlier in the day no wonder.

3rd trig encountered on day 3 of Hadrian's Wall walk, the hilly day, although hills aren't much to speak of, but this one offers excllent 360deg views. Highest point of the walk at 345m. Pillar has minor chipping on one top corner and stands on an exposed plinth; cap missing, asphalt plug; all sight holes closed.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 16th July 1951 costing £11.5s.3d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY86/14 within the Hexham block during 1953. Levelled for height also in 1953. Last maintained by the OS in December 1987. SITE VISIT: Shamefully extortionate parking fee of £3 at car park to the east for the short time required. Chose not to be subjected to this racket and parked on a verge by the road west of the hill from where a longer but rewarding walk was enjoyed. There is also verge parking available on the back roads to the north. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces east, ~84°. All sight holes plugged.

Fourth and last trig on HW trail for those doing it east to west (gets lower and flatter from here to Bowness on Solway), and much the best - superb views all round. Can't quite believe we had such a clear week of weather during one of the wettest summers on record in Britain. Must have done something right!

Marvellous views from this trig point, visited on my Pennine Way walk. Hadrians Wall is adjacent, and this lends a certain extra something to the location.
