'Bagged' en-route to the Colsterdale trig having parked at Caldbergh...A fairly easy approach considering the scant moorland tracks though a much, much rougher one as the 'crow flies' to reach the Colsterdale trig from it. I most liked the location of the Witton Fell trig, out of the way & hidden somewhat amongst the plantation. Liked the cracks 'running' about the pillar, thought they were most aesthetic. Whilst a panoramic view from any trigpoint's just boss, non I don't think comparing to that from Ffridd Fawr on the Mold map, I much prefer a 'tucked-in', hidden, harder to find pillar, a pillar requiring a bit of searching for, a bit of 'digging-out' as with the 'hedge trigs'. There's something just so satisfying in locating a trig engrossed in a hedge, incorporated in a wall or tucked into a corner albeit a necessity to have a Garmin Etrex to supply that crucial 10 figure number...at the time of location it's like having the winning lottery numbers! Taking me onto the reverse side of the coin...I absolutely hate seeking permission to access a trig point on private land. First off it's not always deadly obvious on whose door you ought be knocking when several farms abound, secondly I always feel foolish & yet cheeky in asking & thirdly I dread rejection. Silly I know but I reckon fellow trigbaggers feel pretty much the same way! Wonder if like me fellow trigbaggers whilst loving the obsessive 'collectability' of trigs, don't particularly like them at all, thinking like me them to be downright ugly & much prefering a hill or mountain summit be adorned with a simple pile of rocks!

Parked at SE 14521 85799. Walked up very steep tarmac'd road (Sowden Beck Road) to SE 14456 84888 and into forest, earlier gate had a 'private' sign. Still felt like we shouldn't be there so Mr TJR and the boys waited at the roadside bench. Track started to look like it might be the wrong height for the trig, so went up a track that seemed to be heading up hill at SE 14267 84961. This ended up on the main track to the trigpoint at SE 14226 84685. It was about here I saw a sign saying 'don't upset the ground nesting birds' so clearly a track used by walkers and also signs of mountain bikes, I think if you followed this from Sowden Beck Road you'd be find. Small track from this to the trigpoint at SE 13323 84980. Returned to Sowden Beck Road via main track to find gate open and padlock and chain on ground, so presume it is locked sometimes?

Parked up in East Witton and took the track, Sowden Beck Road, up past the |reservoir and as it turned right at the end of the plantation, slipped under the wooden gates. Followed that track for about a mile until, again, at the western limit of the plantation passed into the heather and before too long spotted the Pillar. Nice views all the way up and along, and the setting was particularly nice this time of the year with the heather. Beer in the Cover Bridge Inn afterwards.

Great views apart from those to the east/north which are still obscured by woodland, though good views north were obtained walking up and back. Having walked along the edge of the access land from Sail Hill, I decided on a different approach from others on here. Entering the forest area at a gate on the southwest corner, rather then via the byway at the southeast. It was quite simple from there. Left at the fork and struck out north from the bend in the track. Today there was the remains of a bonfire as a guide from where to turn off. It was quite easy to spot from there. Im not sure what those rock circles surrounding it are for though. Views are great up Wensleydale.

Even though the gate declares Private Land and Keep Out there is another sign on the ground declaring the area to be an area supported by Millenium Woodland. Either way just followed the forrest track all the way up and the pillar is just off to the north where the newly planted trees ends. Only about fifty yards of yomping necessary. Everything in good order and pillar is surrounded by a double circle of stones - from a bygone age? Views over the whole area magnificent today with wall to wall purple heather.
