The overnight camp was slightly below the pillar (4/12) and at 527 metres, the new dogs first wild camping experience and a novelty at the moment. A path/fence is obvious all along this ridge and so is the peat restoration. Pillar is smashing and standing proud. Gifted to previous memories/places of the Bowland area and especially "Hark to the Bounty" in Slaidburn where I camped on a 50 mile challenge walk from Barley.

Anyone who thinks of Lancashire as mill towns and tired seaside resorts needs to have a walk up to Wolfhole Crag. It's wild and remote but it's easy walking and you can't get lost if you wind up the estate track from Tarnbrook and then follow the fence/wall line to the weathered pillar sat on top of a jumble of rocks.Great views of the 3 Peaks one way and out to sea the other. Parked by stream, a km before Tarnbrook. Up by the long-long shooting track, then bedside the fence along the ridge. Surprisingly dry and easy approach to the pillar, despite it being surrounded by peat-moor. The remnant "tors" of peat suggest that peat cutting in the past on a huge scale has stripped the more accessible parts of the moor.

Day 4 of 10 A Bowland and Furness Walk. I'm really proud of my next 3 logs, this being the first. This walk was devised in the full knowledge that it was not possible to cross the Bowland massif from Slaidburn to Caton without the necessity of a wild camp. The next morning, still alive, a big decision was made to go for it and leave the Hornby Road for the massif at SD652587. Fences and walls can be followed to this summit, but boggy it certainly is, with hundreds of gulls circling overhead, this is one of England's last wilderness areas. I'm logging as slightly damaged as there is some erosion to the base of this pillar now I imagine due to weathering. Onto Ward's then....
