Second visit. For photographs and GPS readings. HISTORY: Pillar built in spring 1936, exact details not on record. Observed as primary triangulation station PP6 within Figure 2 of the OSGB36 retirangulation during 1936. To confuse matters, the OS named this station Little Whernside albeit higher in altitute than the neighbouring primary station on Great Whernside 17 miles away. Flush bracket 2982 was levelled for height in 1950. This marker was last routinely maintained by the OS in 1986 but continues to serve as a GPS Passive station. SITE VISIT: Approached from southeast. Free parking layby for walkers is provided to NE of junction of roads at SD765793. Followed mapped RoW network under Ribblehead Viaduct and past Gunnerfleet Farm to wall stile at SD750799. From there a mapped footpath steeply climbs NW to the summit ridge, leading to a short gentle climb to the summit. Highest summit in the whole of Yorkshire. Unrestricted access land. Trig column stands to the west of the dividing boundary wall. Pillar in fair condition, previous repairs to column are disintegrating. Plastic plug in spider. Flush bracket faces southwest, ~223. All sight holes plugged. Full 360 panoramic view includes: Great Shunner Fell, Buckden Pike, Great Whernside, Pen-Y-Ghent, Park Fell, Pendle Hill, Ingleborough, Rivington, Mallowdale Pike, Black Combe, Coniston Old Man, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, High Street, Cross Fell.

A 12.6mile circuit from Ribblehead station with stunning scenery from beginning to end. Passed beneath the imposing Ribblehead viaduct then across fields at the bottom of Whernside to Bruntscar. From there it was a stiff and prolonged climb to the summit that is amply rewarded by the superb views. Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells were easily visible today. The pillar is somewhat battered and the cap has been replaced with a plastic insert. Adjacent dry-stone wall makes it difficult to get a photo of the pillar and landscape in the same shot. Highest hill I've climbed to date and by far the best views. I'm sure the views from Ingleborough must be good too but the summit was amongst the clouds that day !!

This is NOT Little Whernside, this grid reference refers to plain old Whernside (of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks fame). Little Whernside is an altogether seperate hill some miles from here at grid reference SE 777 027 - Little Whernside is approx 3 1/2 miles NNE of Great Whernside - it has no trig point and is 130 mtrs lower than THE (this) Whernside. That aside, of the 3 Peaks this is my favourite, it gets a bad press but I like it especially if you ascend/descend using the less popular tracks - go mid-week and avoid the ......... well, crowds isnt the right word - it doesnt get anywhere near the traffic that Ingleborough does - but it can be busy on sunny summer weekend afternoons. Been up loads of times since, the views on a good day are fantastic - I refrain from the detail here but its a 360 degree panorama of extending beauty - of course getting that good day is a bit of a challenge. To be pedantic, this is not the highest point in Yorkshire, that feet is on Mickle Fell just west of Middleton On Tees - Whernside is the highest peak in the admistrive boundaries that were imposed in 1974 but not in the real Yorkshire.
