That said it was a great experience and very enjoyable with some great views along the way including Ribblehead Viaduct. This was the second of three pillars and this also offered great views. Over the years it has suffered considerable damage. Some of it has been crudely repaired but there are still large chunks of missing concreteand the original centre for the spider is missing.

Unfortunately there was thick fog at the top but still managed to find the trig, the stone gap between the wall wasn’t the most generous when you’re vertically challenged and the view was limited. Took the steeper climb down the slate rocks which was intense at times. Pillar damaged and crumbling and the centre of the spider was missing.

Little Whernside is an altogether seperate hill some miles from here at grid reference SE 777 027 - Little Whernside is approx 3 1/2 miles NNE of Great Whernside - it has no trig point and is 130 mtrs lower than THE (this) Whernside. That aside, of the 3 Peaks this is my favourite, it gets a bad press but I like it especially if you ascend/descend using the less popular tracks - go mid-week and avoid the ......... well, crowds isnt the right word - it doesnt get anywhere near the traffic that Ingleborough does - but it can be busy on sunny summer weekend afternoons. Been up loads of times since, the views on a good day are fantastic - I refrain from the detail here but its a 360 degree panorama of extending beauty - of course getting that good day is a bit of a challenge. To be pedantic, this is not the highest point in Yorkshire, that feet is on Mickle Fell just west of Middleton On Tees - Whernside is the highest peak in the admistrive boundaries that were imposed in 1974 but not in the real Yorkshire. Very hot... Long walk up from near Dent Station, and then out to Ingleton to hitch back to Lancaster for the train. New path helped. Not quite the top of Yorkshire, but the West Riding top.

A successful attempt at the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in under 12 hours that we organised as Venture Scouts. Whernside was the first of the three climbed, after a long road slog from our campsite in Horton. Climbed with Dr Mike, Chris East and Dominic Smith, my sister & Dr Mike's sister. Pretty murky on the top as I remember...sadly no photographs taken on the summit.

The second of the Three Peaks of Yorkshire challenge for a group of friends from Grimsby over the August Bank holiday, assumed done on the Sunday. It was a boggy walk over from Pen-y-Ghent and a hard slog up from Ribblehead viaduct. We were overtaken by a guy running up with a bike on his shoulder! I didn't pay much attention to the pillar other than getting to it to achieve a summit so I only record the condition as others had done at the time. A retrospective log added 28 April 2020.

About to be overtaken by a fell runner with bike!

Whernside - a historical view Me and the next generation at the pillar in 1979 - it looks to have been windy. The pillar was not cracked then, and the wall behind the pillar has since been rebuilt.©Blackjack
