Parked on Next Way Lane. Took the PRoW which runs south from the lane, which provides a fantastic woodland walk. Then took the PRoW which runs in a semi circle around Wellcombe Bottom. From there, took the PRoW to the west, which presents you with a very steep climb to the summit of Wolstanbury Hill, and the pillar. Spectacular views all round at the summit, including of the Jack & Jill windmills to the east. 6 of 7 today in and around Brighton & Hove

Day four of my SDW stroll, trig nine. Jack and Jill windmills seen along the way to Pyecombe, stopping off for a rest in its Norman church which has an 'open door' policy to visitors as it was once on a pilgrim's route; I was offered a drink and enjoyed a coffee. The trig is off the SDW, but the effort was well worth the stunning views. The ramparts of the Iron Age? hillfort are clearly visible.

Visited on a long, convoluted circular walk from Hassocks also visiting the New Road (TP8221) and Chattri (TP8993) trig points. The base of the pillar is rather eroded, the plug is missing (filled in), and the spider has been scored. But otherwise in good condition. Wolstonbury Hill is a remarkable place. English Heritage’s PastScape site notes the top of the hill is occupied by ‘A Late Bronze Age Ram's Hill type enclosure situated on a clay-with-flints capped, chalk hill … The earthworks have been disturbed in places by late 18th century-early 19th century flint diggings, mainly excavated by the inmates of Hursterpierpoint workhouse’. (The term ‘Ram's Hill type’ derives from the type-site at Ram's Hill in Berkshire.) The hill is a fine place to look for orchids. I saw eight different species in bloom on a single day last year. And it has one of the best views from a Sussex trig point.
