Over gate to west into Top Field. Aimed for field boundary to south west. Pillar slightly hidden by vegetation but came into view in next field over a gate from about fifty meters. A wooden post is next to it, used for hooking the gate open. Views across open fields. Spider and cap in place.

Don’t take the footpath straight ahead but go to the right to the gate marked “top field” and pillar is straight across the field by the gate, impossible to miss! As previously stated a shame about the wooden stake right in front of it. Nice views but not as good today as at Egleton

Doubling back on myself I spotted a couple also seemingly searching for something - turns out they was looking for the pillar as well. More county top baggers than trig baggers but nice to have some company for a change. Only the 2nd time in 5 years! Eventually the pillar was spotted and we all made our way to it. In very good condition, though somebody has plonked a wooden post right next to the FB, which kind of spoils the aesthetic somewhat. Pillar history: Built on the 22nd of May 1938, at a cost of £4 14s 2d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1984.

I found this out on the return journey having crossed a wet, unglazed field and got soaking feet. The Oakham hunt passes this way judging by the fence X-country type poles that provide access over hedges. Tally Ho! The County Top of Rutland. A joint visit with Carole. In a day when we visit twenty trigs this was the most difficult to locate. This was because the road through Knossington was closed and a diversionary route was not signed (initially). Anyway after a circular tour of the area we made it and parked at the road junction to the north-east and then used the track passed the mast. We too met the gentleman caravan dweller and had a nice chat with him. In fact his dog showed us the way to the pillar and back. Although not quite on the public right of way it is still very easy to reach. In excellent condition and still retains an original indented letter plug. Nice views of the surrounding countryside.

3km W. of Oakham, at a road junction, close to a radio transmitter, a private road to the transmitter site on the left provides a parking space, and is the start point for the short walk to the high top in Rutland. The route starts along the metalled road passing the (BT) transmitter site on the left, and then the Severn-Trent covered Parkwood Reservoir. The waymarked bridleway passes through a gate, them through a second gate into a field, and follows the hedge on the right to the SW. Follow the bridlepath along the hedge for 400m to a point where a hedge junction is reached to the R. Just after this point a crossing point is reached on the R. This is private land, so with permission from the landowner, a brief 150m walk to the R., following the hedge on the R. reaches the trig point.
