The good people of Rutland don't seem too proud of the highest pinnacle of their county. Someone has knocked a fairly stout post in front of the pillar, presumably to do with the cross country horse jumping course the field seems to be part of. A nod to Jonny Muir who has inspired me to ascend all the old county tops without the hard work of cycling between them

County top of Rutland. Glorious countryside, rich meadows and old trees, quite halcyon. Sweltering greys mixed with pale blue skies. Got to hand it to Rutland a latin motto on it's signs none of this first in this or similar rubbish of other Counties - Leics doesn't even bother marking the border - just notice the bins change. To the charming Oakham and glorious church afterwards. Then this year's southern trip heads to Norfolk...

Parked in access lane to mast but discovered that you can drive up to the Reservoir gates and save 100m. Follow the bridle path over a cattle grazed field to hedge/fence junction, hop over wooden slated fence and pillar is 50m in a sheep grazed field. I found this out on the return journey having crossed a wet, unglazed field and got soaking feet. The Oakham hunt passes this way judging by the fence X-country type poles that provide access over hedges. Tally Ho! The County Top of Rutland. Don't care that it's not a spectacular peak, it's another top ticked off with a drive through the county town - Oakham - to follow.

Gate to field from BW is easy to open so no need to climb a fence, but make sure you close it or the calves could escape. A sad looking collie looked at us out of the caravan nearby wanting to get outside before the rain due later arrives. Overcast and view (best to SE) slightly misted.

A joint visit with Carole. In a day when we visit twenty trigs this was the most difficult to locate. This was because the road through Knossington was closed and a diversionary route was not signed (initially). Anyway after a circular tour of the area we made it and parked at the road junction to the north-east and then used the track passed the mast. We too met the gentleman caravan dweller and had a nice chat with him. In fact his dog showed us the way to the pillar and back. Although not quite on the public right of way it is still very easy to reach. In excellent condition and still retains an original indented letter plug. Nice views of the surrounding countryside.

3km W. of Oakham, at a road junction, close to a radio transmitter, a private road to the transmitter site on the left provides a parking space, and is the start point for the short walk to the high top in Rutland. The route starts along the metalled road passing the (BT) transmitter site on the left, and then the Severn-Trent covered Parkwood Reservoir. The waymarked bridleway passes through a gate, them through a second gate into a field, and follows the hedge on the right to the SW. Follow the bridlepath along the hedge for 400m to a point where a hedge junction is reached to the R. Just after this point a crossing point is reached on the R. This is private land, so with permission from the landowner, a brief 150m walk to the R., following the hedge on the R. reaches the trig point.
