We started from Hem Gill Shaw took easy angled footpath ENE across Gt Whernside's NW flank, then NE along broad ridge to summit of Little Whernside for a game of 'Where's this Concrete Ring?' (TP17480 Lodge Pasture); retraced steps back to the path we ascended up but carried on up to Gt Whernside. Fantastic weather, views and company great afternoons walk concluded back at our start point bagging the rivet TP0149 at Hem Shaw Gill.

After bagging Conistone Moor we followed the wall north and then picked up a fence that took us across an area of peat groughs. An interesting feature were the historic boundary stones alongside the fence. The fence then went up through a carpet of cotton grass and up the steep Thorn Clod Hill to reach Whernside Pasture/Sweet Hill. The pillar of the 6th highest top in Yorkshire was set on a jumble of rocks which elevated it's interest level above average.Followed the path down to Hag Dyke and then a wonderful footpath down to Kettlewell.

An original centre cap is retained, lightly indented lettering; front sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Cloud down on a very wet day, no views. There is a ferrule and an old pivot benchmark (possibly the old trig) on the hill summit rock approx 4m E of the trig.

Unfortunately while we were attending to the paperwork these two disappeared into the cloud and mistakenly crossed the fence that runs the length of the summit ridge. As a result they were in danger of heading down into upper Nidderdale when in fact they shoulkd have been making for Threshfield! Luckily we heard their voices on the wind to the east of the summit and managed to locate them and put them back on the right track.

Good views but the climb up from Kettlewell is quite badly eroded - longish walk from Kettlewell to Buckden via here and Buckden Pike. No cars, on foot. Up again 26/11/2006 in very poor weather - cold, windy and in low cloud giving mist & visibility of 100ft. Footpath suffering even more. Still no cars, still on foot.
