The Lazarus of pillars, arisen from the dead (although I wouldn't trust a reading from it). Wonderful day for last round of 2016 trigging - sunny, frosty and clear blue skies, so panoramic views across N horizon; other directions obscured by adjacent hedge. Centre open, all s/holes lost below break point in pillar, which is still otherwise surprisingly OK for its adventure.

Located just off the A360 with a convenient point to pull in off this fairly fast road at entrance to the comms mast access road. The footpath shown on the OS maps approx 70m south of this access road appears to have been lost, I guess everyone uses the mast access road now. As reported, the pillar has been toppled (FB is still face down) - it will need a sturdy iron bar to provide leverage to turn it, far too heavy to do this without assistance. Possibly sustained damage over time by hedge cutting machinery before it finally bit the dust! Re-excavated the rivet (13 months since it was last exposed), a good opportunity to see what lies beneath. Cap is missing leaving central hole open. Top edges have sustained some hefty chipping. Good rural views.

Sited between a track and a hedge on the edge of a large, recently sowed field. The pillar has FB S2208 facing the masts; it lacks a cap or plug and is badly damaged all around its base. The site is easily reached along the track a short way from the main road passing Newton Barrow on the way. There is a big view of the large fields and gently rolling downland of the surrounding countryside. Grovely Wood can be seen to the southwest and the view continues up the Wyle Valley in the west. Looking over the hedge to the southeast are the northern suburbs of Salisbury. The top of the spire of the cathedral rises above a ridge on the skyline. High above skylarks were twittering and in the distance to the east a couple of flares were shot into the air from Boscombe Down Airfield.

I hadn't looked at this page before visiting so hadn't noticed the apparent difference. Will have to make another visit to further investigate. Walked up from the main road on the track. It would appear that the footpath which is shown on the other side of the hedge down to South Newton has been lost to farming as I couldn't make it out.I only went as far the end of the transmitter compound to look down into the Wylye Valley but there didn't seem to be a way cut through the stubble.I guess everyone uses the trackway.
