Muddy footpath up from Scalford, following the field edge rather than the mapped right of way. Pillar in middle of pasture; slight crack in surface, plinth exposed, plug intact. Pellet holes in FB - perhaps the trig has been used for target practice. Overcast day - views limited.

We approached this from the Scalford end of the footpath. The field the trig was in was packed full of cows - and bulls - however they all moved away pretty sharpish when they saw me coming. I left husband and dog in the next field just in case there was any shenanigans but the cattle was very submissive. Trig is looking very exposed and there are some cracks but not in to bad a condition. Lovely all round views of nice countryside. Great that this is our 50th pillar! Whoop.

The BBC aerial stands out in the distance. On to the last trig of the day at Eastwell. Getting warm!

(2035) 167 days since logging a fresh trig - it's definitely nice to get out and about again! First port of call was the village of Scalford. Parked near to the church, and bagged 2 CBMs and a FB whilst on my way to the pillar. Steady walk following the RoW. Field containing the pillar given over to pasture - no livestock about today. The base of the pillar is exposed, and a crack runs the full width of the side sporting the FB, but otherwise all is good. Pillar history: Built on the 12th of Sept 1948, at a cost of £8 8s 8d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1978.

Delayed on my circular walk by paths not remade after ploughing, missing waymarkers, electric fences where none should be , a mob of over enthusiastic bullocks and , in one memorable spot, a metal gate which the farmer had used as part of his electric fence circuit , I neared the trig with the sun dipping under the horizon, and wondered if I'd spot it at all . Happily though, there it was in the open, silhouetted against the darkening sky. A quick check by torchlight suggested that despite apparently being a favourite spot for cattle to stand around, the pillar is in decent condition, metalwork intact, but with the base being exposed as the hooves churn away the soil around it.

I walked up from Scalford but one field did not have the footpath remarked across it after ploughing and planting. Fortunately, it was not too muddy. The pillar stands in another grassy field that the footpath passes through, so access was easy. However, I nearly took the wrong footpath for my return as another one enters the same field. Good views.
