One of those trigs where winter makes all the difference. After parking up on Wyke Lane outside the pig farm, I was fully prepared to go into the farm to ask for permission having read the positive comments on here, but the strong signage on the farm gate, coupled with the lack of activity at the premises made me think again, however, so I had a walk up the lane and a good look at the wooded section. The trees and hedging adjacent to the works don't seem to be their property, as all the security etc is well away - and it doesn't seem to belong to the farmer, so I found a spot in the barbed wire where it was already collapsed and headed into the copse. It is boggy as hell, but as it was winter, the rough vegetation is a fraction of the difficulty of summer and it soon gets you through to a locked field gate where you can hop over and simply follow the field edge all the way to the pillar. You're not in sight of the farm at this point, so whilst there was no livestock in the field I felt no need to return to seek permission. The muddy, boggy stalk up the field edge yielded a perfect trig, except for it having being toppled. It's in excellent condition, with lovely sharp metalwork. Such a shame, and if it were not for its location, surely prime for a thorough restoration. After pictures, I returned the same way - without challenge or problem. The stink of fertiliser and swine will haunt me for days, however.

From the metal gate in the farmyard the pillar lies almost due south across the field and just before reaching a jutting out corner of woodland. Although lying on its side the pillar is remarkably well preserved with, fortunately, the flush bracket upermost. Not the greatest of vantage points. I don't know what the problem is here as the trig isn't actually on the works property as far as I can see - the field was full of cattle today so I'm guessing it belongs to the nearby farm. You don't have to approach through the new plantation (which I assume belongs to the works and hence the access troubles as detailed previously). Between Fearnley Farm and the plantation (get the right OS map) I simply found an easy point to climb the fence (might be less so in the summer), followed the field perimiter right, then left, to find the trig near the pylon, no problem. Weather awful so the photo's aren't too good. No cars, on foot!

He was a very friendly man called Brian Skinner who was interested in what we do although he likened it to train spotting! I explained what I wanted to do and he allowed me to just get on with it. I went along the road NW to the start of the plantation and cut through to the field where I could see the trig at the top of the rise. Other than being horizontal the trig looked in good condition.
